UConn Offers Secure ChatGPT Licenses to Staff and Faculty

Great news for the University of Connecticut community! UConn's Information Technology Services (ITS) is now officially providing ChatGPT licenses for all faculty and staff. This initiative comes from a formal agreement with OpenAI, ensuring that your use of this powerful AI tool is both secure and fully compliant with university data policies.

Secure and Compliant AI at Your Fingertips

With your university-provided ChatGPT license, you can confidently work with sensitive information. You can enter text or upload files securely, knowing that the AI model will not use any personal files from your computer or cloud storage—like OneDrive, your email, or desktop files—unless you explicitly upload them. The model's knowledge is based on public web data, keeping your private university data safe.

Transitioning Your Existing Account

If you are already using a personal paid ChatGPT account for university-related activities, you will need to switch over to the official UConn license. The transition is designed to be smooth. You will have the choice to either export your chat history and data or transfer it directly to your new UConn-managed account. ITS will contact current account owners with detailed instructions on how to migrate everything over. As a bonus, OpenAI will issue a refund for the remaining balance on your personal subscription.

How to Get Your UConn ChatGPT License

All university-sanctioned ChatGPT licenses, whether they are new or being transferred, must be acquired through the official software portal. You can purchase your license directly from UConn's software page using a KFS account number.
