AI Restores Ancient Chinese Calligraphy Masterpiece
In an incredible fusion of ancient art and modern technology, a Chinese research team has successfully given a 1,600-year-old romantic poetry scroll a new life. Using the power of artificial intelligence, researchers have managed to fully restore a cultural treasure, showcasing how digital tools can help preserve our shared history.
The Digital Rebirth of a Masterpiece
The work in question is the celebrated masterpiece Rhapsody on the Luo River Goddess, also known as Luoshen Fu. Penned in the 4th century by the renowned calligrapher Wang Xianzhi, this piece is a cornerstone of Chinese artistic heritage. Unfortunately, over the centuries, time took its toll, and only about a quarter of the original verses had survived.
However, a dedicated team from Peking University’s Centre for Chinese Font Design and Research took on the challenge. As announced on the university's social media, they have now re-created the entire scroll by skillfully combining traditional calligraphic font design principles with cutting-edge AI character generation.

How AI Breathed New Life into Ancient Art
The restoration process was both meticulous and innovative. The team began with the 250 surviving characters from the original scroll. They conducted a detailed analysis of these characters, identifying the unique stylistic traits of Wang Xianzhi's hand. This data was then used to train an AI model to understand and replicate the original calligrapher's style and form.
The AI then generated the missing characters, expanding upon the fragmented scroll to produce a complete, 919-character rendition. The university celebrated this achievement, stating that it “vividly illuminates the fusion potential of ‘AI plus culture’ – where traditional calligraphy work gains fresh modes of expression in the digital age”.
The Story of Luoshen Fu
The text of Luoshen Fu itself has a rich history. It is a prose poem originally written around AD 222 by Cao Zhi, a prince from the state of Cao Wei during China’s Three Kingdoms period. Cao Zhi's romantic and tragic poem was later immortalized in calligraphy by Wang Xianzhi, creating the masterpiece that has now been digitally preserved for generations to come.
