This simple act is a perfect reminder of how easily images can mislead a viewer.

That sign highlighted a clear risk we face every day. An image and a timestamp might look like solid proof, but they should never be taken at face value. Photos and videos can be staged, manipulated, or completely misinterpreted. The metadata that accompanies these files, such as timestamps and location data, can be edited by anyone with malicious intent. A single photo, without context, can easily deceive someone scrolling through their social media feed.

In forensic collections and litigation, creating a defensible case requires more than just accepting a picture or a timestamp as proof. When analyzing digital data, it is crucial to remain skeptical of what is presented and always seek corroboration when needed.

A Practical Checklist for Verifying Digital Evidence

Here is a quick five-step checklist to consider when you need to validate photo or video evidence:

1. Always ask for the original, native files. Screenshots can strip or alter important metadata and may omit key details that are present in the source file.
2. Review the EXIF metadata, such as the original date, time, and GPS data, but treat this information as just one data point, not as definitive proof.
3. If you doubt an image’s authenticity, perform a reverse image search to see if older versions or duplicate copies of the image exist online.
4. Corroborate the image with other data sources. This can include telemetry data like phone location history, fitness app logs, navigation app data, server logs, or witness statements.
5. For high-stakes matters, bring in a forensic analyst. They can examine device artifacts, review logs, and perform a full file system data extraction if necessary.
