Google appears to be considering a significant visual overhaul for its Gemini AI app, potentially shifting away from its current chatbot-style interface. This move could be a strategic response to the success of visually-driven AI applications, like OpenAI's video editor Sora, which recently climbed to the top of the U.S. App Store.

A Shift From Chat to Visual Feed

The potential new design, which is not yet available to the public, was discovered within the Gemini Android app's code by reverse engineers at Android Authority. The experimental interface replaces the simple chat-style screen with a dynamic, scrollable feed. This feed is designed to be more engaging, featuring suggested prompts alongside eye-catching photos and colorful backgrounds to inspire users.

When asked for a comment on the discovery, a Google spokesperson stated that there is no announcement to be made “just yet,” neither confirming nor denying the potential change.

What the New Interface Looks Like

Screenshots from the activated experimental mode show a redesigned home screen where key shortcuts like “Create Image” and “Deep Research” are moved to the top for easier access. Below these buttons, the app presents a feed of creative and practical prompts.

Examples of these suggested prompts include imaginative ideas such as “Teleport me to deep space,” “Give me a vintage or grunge look,” and “Turn my drawing into a storybook.” Other suggestions focus on productivity, like “Brainstorm out loud with Live” and “Send me a daily news roundup.” The goal is to guide users and showcase the broad capabilities of Gemini's AI, rather than leaving them with a blank text box.

Competing in the Visual AI Space

This potential redesign would make the Gemini app more visually appealing and could help Google better compete with rivals like OpenAI. While ChatGPT has maintained a minimalist interface, this new feed-style approach from Google could attract users looking for a more guided and creative experience.

Furthermore, this move aligns with recent trends showing strong consumer interest in visual AI tools. The Gemini app itself saw a surge in popularity in September following the release of its new AI image model, Nano Banana. By leaning into a more visual and inspirational design, Google could capitalize on this momentum and solidify Gemini's position in the competitive AI landscape.
