Our Relationship Now Includes An AI Chatbot

It started as a joke. We were stuck in one of those classic, low-stakes relationship deadlocks: what to have for dinner. On a whim, my partner pulled out their phone and said, 'Let's just ask the AI.' That was our first time inviting ChatGPT into our decision-making. Now, months later, I’m not always sure where my partner’s ideas end and the AI’s begin.

The Accidental Introduction

What began with dinner suggestions quickly snowballed. We used it to brainstorm weekend trip itineraries, find polite ways to decline invitations, and even draft funny captions for our photos. It felt like we had a hyper-efficient, endlessly creative personal assistant. The AI was a novelty, a fun tool that added a layer of unexpected creativity to our daily lives. It never got tired of our questions and always had an answer, making it an easy and often helpful resource to turn to.

An Enthusiastic Third Wheel

In many ways, ChatGPT became a positive force. It helped us settle silly debates by acting as a neutral fact-checker. It gave us fresh ideas when we felt uninspired, breaking us out of our routines. It was like a third brain in the room, one that had processed a significant portion of the internet. The AI’s relentless enthusiasm was infectious, and using it for mundane tasks often turned chores into a game. It was a source of amusement, a shared joke, and a surprisingly useful collaborator.

When The AI Gets It Wrong

But the novelty began to wear thin when we tried to apply its logic to more human situations. The AI is enthusiastic, but it is also profoundly misguided because it lacks any real understanding of human emotion. It once suggested we resolve a serious disagreement by 'gamifying our communication with a points-based system.' The suggestion was so clinical and detached that it was jarring. Another time, its attempt at a comforting message came across as a string of hollow platitudes. These moments were stark reminders that we were interacting with a complex algorithm, not an empathetic being. Its advice, devoid of context and feeling, often missed the mark completely.

We realized we needed to set boundaries. ChatGPT is a tool, not a therapist or a friend. We've made a conscious effort to keep it out of important conversations and emotional discussions. It’s great for planning a holiday, but not for navigating the complexities of our hearts. We had to learn to rely on each other again for the things that truly matter: empathy, understanding, and genuine connection. Our relationship is for us, and the AI can only be an occasional, carefully managed guest.

Living with an AI as a third person in our relationship is a strange, modern experiment. It's a testament to how deeply technology is weaving itself into the fabric of our lives. We’re still a couple, just with the occasional input of a very confident, and very artificial, third person. It’s a bizarre love story, and we're still figuring out the rules as we go.
