Why ChatGPT Plus Is A Luxury Princeton Cannot Afford
Recent budget cuts at Princeton University have been felt across campus, from reduced mealtimes at Frist to a 50 percent reduction in student library staffing and the cancellation of Wintersession. The administration's message is clear: in the face of a suspended $210 million in federal grants, every dollar counts. This makes proposals to spend university funds on non-essential AI initiatives particularly questionable.
The High Cost of Universal AI Access
A recent opinion piece suggested that Princeton should provide all students with a free subscription to ChatGPT Plus, a tool costing $20 per month, to equalize access. However, amid a budget crunch that is actively diminishing campus services, this proposal seems ill-timed and fiscally irresponsible.
Providing this tool to all students, faculty, and postdocs would mean funding over 11,000 subscriptions. While the exact cost to Princeton is unknown, institutional licenses for similar universities typically range from $25 to $30 per user monthly. Even at a conservative $20 per user, the annual cost would exceed $2.6 million.
This sum represents 65 percent of the research funding slashed from Princeton’s NOAA-funded projects and is equivalent to nearly 170,000 hours of paid student work at the campus minimum wage. For many students who rely on campus jobs to cover living expenses, prioritizing student employment is far more crucial for equity than providing priority access to an AI that summarizes notes.
Is ChatGPT Plus a Necessity or a Luxury
Even if the university were not in a financial crisis, a universal ChatGPT Plus subscription would be a misallocation of resources because it is not a universal necessity. The primary differences between the free and paid versions include faster response times, more queries with the newest model, and advanced tools for image generation and data visualization. While these features may be beneficial for some, they are less critical for students in the social sciences, arts, and humanities.
For many in the humanities, generative AI is most useful for suggesting research sources or summarizing concepts, tasks for which free tools like the standard ChatGPT and Google AI are perfectly sufficient. Access to ChatGPT Plus is a convenience, much like a Quizlet Plus subscription, but its absence does not create a significant inequality when free alternatives perform the core functions well. A more sensible approach would be to offer subscriptions only to students in courses where its advanced features are uniquely beneficial.
The Hidden Environmental and Social Costs
Beyond the financial implications, promoting widespread use of a more advanced AI model carries significant environmental burdens. The operation of ChatGPT, particularly for complex tasks like image generation, requires a tremendous amount of electricity and water. Elevating its role on campus is an environmentally irresponsible move, regardless of how students use it.
Social responsibility requires us to look beyond our immediate campus. While AI is an inevitable part of the future, its overuse is wasteful. Princeton students should be conscientious, critical thinkers who are mindful of AI's environmental impact and resist the urge to use it for every mundane task. The university's strategy should be targeted, providing access to ChatGPT Plus only when it offers a distinct advantage that comparable free models cannot match.
