OpenAI Doubles Down On Enterprise AI Solutions
It's undeniable that OpenAI, perhaps matched only by Nvidia, has been a primary force in the recent AI tools revolution. In just three years, the company's flagship product, ChatGPT, has become a household name, synonymous with artificial intelligence for millions of users worldwide.
The next major frontier for OpenAI is the enterprise market, where the most significant investment and integration opportunities lie. To understand this strategic shift, we spoke with Matt Weaver, Head of Solutions Engineering for EMEA at OpenAI, about how the company plans to bring its powerful AI into the workplace.
A New Focus on the Enterprise
Following the company's recent Dev Day, OpenAI has made its intentions clear. The goal is to empower developers and businesses to build powerful applications on its platform.
“Our goal is simple,” Weaver declares. “It's to make it possible for anyone from a developer perspective that's got an idea and a few lines of code, to build the next great company on our platform… and we’re trying to give them all the tools to do that.”
To achieve this, OpenAI announced a suite of new tools designed to remove friction for developers:
- AgentKit and AgentBuilder: These platforms simplify the process of building AI agents, complete with improved user interface components.
- Codex: An agentic coding model that developers can now use across their entire workflow, from the terminal to IDEs and the cloud. It also includes a Slack plugin for real-time collaboration and an SDK to help productionize code.
- Apps in ChatGPT: This feature allows enterprises to develop custom user interfaces directly within ChatGPT, creating a new way for businesses to engage with users where they already are.
Weaver notes that a common pain point for businesses is redundant work. “What we see when we work with enterprises—and it breaks my heart sometimes,” he says, “is that we'll go into five different companies, and they're all building the same scaffolding for their applications to work, rather than spending time working on the thing that will really differentiate for their business.”
By providing this foundational infrastructure, OpenAI aims to become the premier destination for builders—from startups to global corporations—to create their next-generation GenAI applications.
The Top-Down, Bottom-Up Strategy
Unlike many enterprise technologies that are pushed from the top, ChatGPT gained its popularity through grassroots, consumer adoption. This unique trajectory is now fueling its growth within businesses.
“Most people are using ChatGPT in their personal lives, and they're showing up at work expecting the same access to the same level of intelligence, the same ease of use,” Weaver explains, noting that OpenAI already has over five million paying business users.
This has led to what he calls a “tops down, bottoms up” approach. While leadership may pursue ambitious, transformational AI projects, it's crucial to pair those initiatives with widespread employee adoption and AI literacy.
“If you don’t pair that with building AI literacy among your employees, then you could often fail,” he warns.
Weaver highlights that when deploying ChatGPT Enterprise, the company often hosts hackathons where employees uncover “incredibly valuable use cases for AI deployment that senior management has never thought of.” This demonstrates the power of empowering the entire workforce. On a personal level, Weaver even uses ChatGPT agents to help plan his wedding, showcasing the tool's versatility for both professional and personal tasks.
Staying Mission-Aligned Amidst the Hype
With the incredible pace of development and constant public discourse, staying focused can be a challenge. Weaver explains that the company's unwavering mission is the key.
“OpenAI is a very mission-aligned company... and the mission is to build AGI for the benefit of everyone, so when you’re making big decisions… it’s with that in mind,” he says.
He emphasizes the importance of tuning out the external noise and maintaining a calm, focused internal atmosphere. “We have a mission, we know what it is, we know what it’s going to take to get to the next step—and we can’t forget that over 800 million people rely on us every single week.”
