Salesforce Taps OpenAI for Major ChatGPT Integration

Amidst growing investor pressure to capitalize on the artificial intelligence boom, Salesforce has announced significant partnerships with generative AI leaders OpenAI and Anthropic. The collaborations aim to embed advanced AI capabilities directly into its Agentforce 360 software, signaling a major strategic push into the rapidly evolving AI landscape.

A Strategic Alliance to Enhance Agentforce

Salesforce revealed that AI models from both OpenAI and Anthropic will be integrated into its Agentforce 360 platform. This move comes just a day after the company expanded its Agentforce software to handle voice calls in addition to text chats, showcasing a clear focus on enhancing customer interaction tools.

Brian Landsman, CEO of Salesforce's AppExchange, highlighted the transformative nature of these partnerships. "The way people are going to interact with software is going to fundamentally shift," he stated, suggesting that future interactions could happen seamlessly within platforms like ChatGPT or Slack. The collaboration will also bring Agentforce 360 into Anthropic's Claude AI model.

Navigating Market Pressures and AI Expectations

The timing of this announcement is critical for Salesforce, whose shares have fallen approximately 26% this year, lagging behind the S&P 500's 13% gain. Wall Street has been looking for faster revenue growth and a more defined AI strategy. According to Morgan Stanley analysts, revenue from Agentforce has been "modest" so far, amplifying the need for such high-profile AI integrations.

Salesforce is not alone in this trend. Other major software companies like Atlassian, Datadog, and Intuit have already forged deals with OpenAI. This follows Microsoft's massive nearly $14 billion investment in the AI pioneer and a commitment from Databricks to spend $100 million on OpenAI models.

E-commerce and Data Visualization in ChatGPT

A key feature of the integration will allow customers to access their corporate data in Agentforce 360 and create Tableau charts directly through the ChatGPT interface, which boasts over 800 million weekly users. This is made possible by a new software development kit from OpenAI designed for third-party application integration.

Perhaps the most significant development is the introduction of e-commerce capabilities. Later in 2025, companies using both Salesforce and OpenAI will be able to sell products using ChatGPT's instant checkout feature. This builds on OpenAI's recent moves to allow users to buy products from Etsy and Shopify merchants directly within the chat interface.

Benioff on Salesforce's Role in the AI Ecosystem

Salesforce CEO Marc Benioff has been actively defending his company's role in the AI boom. On a recent earnings call, he pointed out that the AI leaders themselves, including OpenAI and Anthropic, are customers of Salesforce, relying on tools like Slack as their operational backbone.

"All these next-generation AI companies ranging from OpenAI to Anthropic to everyone are on Slack," Benioff told analysts. "And it is incredible how they've used that as their operating system and as their platform to run their companies."

Additionally, Salesforce's own engineering teams are adopting Anthropic's Claude Code to enhance their programming workflows, demonstrating a deep, multi-faceted commitment to these new AI partnerships.
