OpenAI, the company behind the widely popular chatbot ChatGPT, has ventured into the social media landscape. This week, it announced a new social media platform named Sora, built upon its advanced video generation technology. The app is now available for iPhone users, but gaining access isn't as simple as just downloading it from the store.

What is the Sora Social App?

Sora offers a unique twist on social networking. While the platform is designed for real human interaction, the content itself is entirely composed of AI-generated videos. An in-app disclaimer notes that nothing on the platform is authentic. Despite this, OpenAI's vision is for users to use Sora as a new way to connect with friends and family.

To foster this community-focused approach, the app is currently invite-only. The core idea is that you and your friends will want to join and explore this new AI-driven social space together.

How to Get an Invite Code for Sora

Invite codes began rolling out slowly after the app's launch on Tuesday. If you're eager to get inside, here are the initial steps you need to take to get on the list:

  1. Download the Sora app directly from the Apple App Store. Be sure to select the app with the navy and white cloud icon.
  2. Log in using your existing ChatGPT account or select Use different account to create a new one.
  3. Tap on the button that says Notify me when access opens.
  4. When prompted, allow the app to send you push notifications to ensure you're alerted when access is granted.

In a post on X, OpenAI stated that the initial rollout is focused on the US and Canada, with plans for rapid expansion. The company is also giving priority access to its paying Pro users.

What Happens After You Get an Invite?

Once you receive an invite code, you can complete your account setup. You'll then be able to access Sora through both the mobile app and its website. As a new member, you'll also receive four new invite codes to share with friends, helping your social circle join the platform with you.

(Disclosure: Ziff Davis, CNET's parent company, filed a lawsuit in April against OpenAI, alleging copyright infringement in the training and operation of its AI systems.)
