California Governor Gavin Newsom has taken to social media to criticize President Donald Trump, using a provocative AI-generated image to make his point. The image portrays Trump as Marie Antoinette, the French queen often associated with aristocratic indifference, and was deployed as Trump headed to his Mar-a-Lago club for the weekend.

AI Image Serves as Political Jab

Newsom's critique, shared in a series of posts on X, came during a prolonged government shutdown, with funding for programs like SNAP food benefits hanging in the balance. The governor accused Trump of trying to block food aid and showing that he "DOES NOT CARE ABOUT YOU."

The governor's press office followed up with the AI-generated image, which they had used before. The picture depicts Trump in 18th-century royal attire, a clear reference to the "Let them eat cake" narrative symbolizing luxury amid public suffering. The press office captioned the post: “GOOD NIGHT, PEASANTS!”

Shutdown Woes and a Weekend Getaway

The timing of the criticism is significant. Trump's trip to Mar-a-Lago marks his 13th visit to the resort during his second term. This comes as the longest government shutdown in history causes widespread issues, including travel disruptions. The FAA has been forced to reduce flights at major airports due to the shutdown's impact.

Adding to the tension, the Supreme Court temporarily blocked a judge's order that would have required the Trump administration to fully fund SNAP benefits. The program experienced its first-ever lapse in funding in its 61-year history, leaving many families in a precarious position.

A Pattern of Criticism

This isn't the first time Newsom's office has used this particular piece of AI-generated art to troll the President. In October, they shared the image after reports surfaced that work on a new White House ballroom was continuing despite the budget stalemate that had shuttered other federal agencies.

At the time, the governor's press office posted, "TRUMP ‘MARIE ANTOINETTE’ SAYS, ‘NO HEALTH CARE FOR YOU PEASANTS, BUT A BALLROOM FOR THE QUEEN!’" The reference to Marie Antoinette is a deliberate choice to paint the administration as out of touch with the needs of everyday people.
