AI Surveillance Enhances Safety in Tourist Zones

Tourism police have deployed advanced AI-powered surveillance cameras at popular tourist destinations across the nation. This strategic move has already resulted in nearly 200 arrests since its implementation began in July 2024.

Pol Lt Gen Saksira Phueakum, commander of the Tourist Police Bureau, stated on Saturday that this initiative is a direct response to National Police Chief Pol Gen Kittharath Punpetchs directive. The primary goal is to modernize crime prevention techniques and significantly enhance public safety for everyone.

Real Time Identification and Proactive Monitoring

According to Pol Lt Gen Saksira, these sophisticated AI cameras are directly linked to central databases. These databases contain comprehensive information, including existing arrest warrants and criminal records. This integration allows for the real time identification of individuals who have outstanding charges or are considered high risk.

Furthermore, the technology actively monitors approximately 600 individuals who have been flagged for suspicious activity. This group includes known local and foreign pickpocket gangs and illegal currency exchange operators. When any of these individuals enter monitored tourist zones, police units receive instant alerts. This system enables a rapid response to prevent potential offenses against both tourists and local residents.

Since the system was launched, it has facilitated the arrest of 180 suspects. These arrests have occurred in several key tourist areas, with Pattaya accounting for 102 arrests, Chiang Mai for 54, Nakhon Ratchasima for 21, and Suvarnabhumi Airport for 3.

The offenses for which these individuals were apprehended range from theft and assault to more serious crimes, such as attempted murder, underscoring the system's effectiveness in tackling a spectrum of criminal behavior.

Nationwide Expansion Planned to Boost Tourist Confidence

Officials have announced plans to expand this AI camera network to cover all major tourist areas throughout Thailand. This expansion aims to create a strong deterrent against criminal activity.

The overarching objective of this technological upgrade is to strengthen confidence in Thailand as a safe and secure destination for travelers. Authorities believe these measures will also contribute to a better overall experience for both tourists and local communities, fostering a more secure and welcoming environment.
