Following OpenAI's acquisition of io, the artificial intelligence hardware startup founded by former Apple designer Jony Ive, news has surfaced about a collaborative AI device. This innovative product is currently in its prototyping stage. Reports suggest it is slightly larger than Humane's discontinued Ai Pin but aims for an elegance reminiscent of the iPod Shuffle. Mass production is anticipated to begin in 2027, with assembly and shipping potentially occurring outside China to mitigate geopolitical risks.

TF Securities International analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, in a post on X formerly Twitter, confirmed that the new AI device from Jony Ive and OpenAI is indeed in the prototype phase. Kuo reiterated its size comparison to Humane's Ai Pin, a contextual computer and wearable device, and its potential for iPod Shuffle like compactness and elegance. However, he cautioned that being in the prototype phase means its final design and specifications could evolve.
Innovative Features A Displayless Contextual AI
The upcoming AI device is expected to incorporate cameras and microphones for environmental detection. This feature would be particularly useful if the device is worn around the neck, offering contextual awareness of the user's surroundings. Notably, it will reportedly lack a display. Instead, it will connect to smartphones and PCs, utilizing their computational resources and display capabilities.
Production Roadmap and Geopolitical Considerations
Kuo also stated that Jony Ive's io and OpenAI are targeting 2027 for the commencement of mass production for this AI device. In light of ongoing geopolitical challenges and the tariff tensions between China and the US, assembly and shipping operations might be strategically located outside China. Vietnam has been identified as a possible assembly location.

Previous reports indicate that OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has provided company employees with a sneak peek of the device. It is envisioned as a versatile gadget that can be carried in a user's pocket, placed on a desk, or function as an AI neckpiece. Altman reportedly emphasized that this AI device is distinct from smart glasses, a product category about which Jony Ive has expressed skepticism regarding wearable AI. The device is ambitiously being referred to as the third core device for a user's desk, alongside the MacBook Pro and iPhone.
