Photoroom Makes Strategic Move Acquiring GenerateBanners

Photoroom, the renowned French photo editing application recently valued at $500 million, has successfully completed its first acquisition. The company has purchased a startup specializing in automated image generation combined with sophisticated text layout capabilities.

Matthieu Rouif, co-founder and CEO of Photoroom, described the event as a "big day" for the company. He announced the "strategic" acquisition of GenerateBanners through a social media update from the Google I/O conference.

Enhancing Ad Creation with Advanced Text Layout

Explaining the core reasoning for this acquisition, Rouif highlighted that GenerateBanners offers technology that "enables the layout and placement of text at scale." This capability is crucial for Photoroom's user base.

Photoroom elaborated on the synergy: "Photoroom's API already powers millions of product images, but customers needed template-based text composition to convert those images into ready-to-run ads. GenerateBanners solved precisely that challenge. It enables consistent branded campaigns across all marketing and commerce channels."

The financial terms of the acquisition have not been disclosed.

New Leadership and Integration

As part of the acquisition agreement, Thibaut Patel, the founder of GenerateBanners, will join Photoroom. He is set to lead the API team as its Head of API, bringing his expertise directly into Photoroom's core operations.

Patel expressed his enthusiasm for the merger, stating: "Photoroom was an obvious match for GenerateBanners. It has a proven track of record shipping state-of-the-art AI models, and productizing them."

Photoroom Expands Offerings and Market Reach

In addition to this acquisition, Photoroom has also unveiled a new product named Visual Ads Automation. This innovative tool is designed to transform entire product ranges into compelling creative advertisements.

Founded in 2019, Photoroom's mission is to democratize photo editing. The app is known for its user-friendliness, delivering results comparable to those of a professional photographer but without the associated costs.

The company processes approximately five billion images annually and achieved €50 million in annual recurring revenue in 2023. Photoroom is profitable and has recently expanded its focus to the enterprise sector, attracting major clients like Amazon and DoorDash.
