As an individual deeply immersed in testing artificial intelligence models and pushing AI tools to their absolute limits, I've compiled an ongoing wishlist of functionalities for ChatGPT.

It's undeniable that OpenAI's chatbot remains a top-tier assistant, holding its ground against powerful contenders like Gemini 2.5 Pro and Claude 4 Sonnet. However, after extensively evaluating nearly every significant model available, certain frustrating gaps in its functionality have become apparent.

Here are five features that I believe ChatGPT urgently needs to implement to not just keep pace but to lead the pack, especially in an increasingly competitive AI landscape.

Enhanced Visual Context Screenshot Memory

While ChatGPT possesses the capability to analyze images, a significant limitation is its inability to remember these visuals once a session concludes. This means if you share a screenshot during a troubleshooting process or while working on a project with multiple steps, the assistant fails to retain this crucial visual context for future interactions. It would be incredibly beneficial for the chatbot to store and reference visuals across different chats, much like it currently remembers previous text-based conversations.

Intelligent Conversation Management

OpenAI recently introduced an Image Library, which is a step in the right direction for managing generated visuals. But why stop there? A more sophisticated system for organizing conversations would be a game-changer. Imagine being able to sort chats by topic, project, or even simple, searchable tags. I've found that even the current search functionality for previous chats isn't as effective as it could be. Enhanced organization would make it far easier to revisit important threads without the hassle of sifting through a cluttered sidebar.

Native AI Video Creation Capabilities

ChatGPT excels at writing scripts, developing shot lists, and even generating images that can be used for storyboards. However, it currently lacks the intrinsic ability to generate video content on its own. With competitors like Google’s Veo 3, Kling, and Runway AI rapidly advancing in the text-to-video domain, incorporating native video generation feels like the next logical evolutionary step for ChatGPT. This is a feature that would significantly broaden its appeal and utility, especially for creators. For instance, innovative tools are already emerging, as highlighted by a tweet from May 21, 2025 showcasing Google Flow and Veo 3 for AI filmmaking.

Automatic Custom GPT Creation

The introduction of Custom GPTs is a fantastic idea, and creating them is relatively straightforward. Yet, the setup process still demands a notable investment of time and effort. What if ChatGPT could passively observe your usage patterns - your typical tone, preferred output formats, and the types of tasks you frequently repeat - and then automatically generate a tailored GPT that perfectly fits your needs? A 'build-as-you-go' GPT feature would make personalization effortless for both casual users and power users, adapting dynamically to individual workflows.

Advanced Document Interaction Scanned Content

ChatGPT is already proficient at summarizing PDFs and various documents, and it offers a useful Voice feature for interaction. However, a significant enhancement would be the ability to process scanned books or handwritten pages and then read them aloud. Imagine uploading an old, physically scanned textbook and having ChatGPT narrate it back to you in an audiobook-style, while simultaneously being able to answer your questions about the content or summarize specific chapters. This powerful combination of voice output and visual input processing could make ChatGPT an even more indispensable tool for students, researchers, and busy professionals.

While ChatGPT is undeniably a powerful AI tool, it's not without areas for improvement. As the landscape of AI tools continues its rapid evolution, features such as persistent visual memory, more sophisticated chat management, and integrated video generation seem like obvious and necessary updates. As someone who tests AI capabilities daily, I'll be eagerly awaiting these upgrades and will be among the first to welcome them when they arrive.
