Microsoft is hosting its AI Skills Fest, an engaging learning event running until May 28. This unique initiative, playfully termed festification by the author, offers enjoyable AI learning opportunities with a limited time remaining to join.
Free AI Training For Everyone
The AI Skills Fest features courses suitable for all, from AI newcomers to seasoned professionals. Whether you are starting with the basics or exploring advanced AI concepts, the program provides a unified learning experience, allowing participants to select lessons according to their interests and expertise. Training materials are widely accessible, with lessons offered in numerous languages including Albanian, Arabic, Chinese (Mandarin and Simplified), English, French, German, Hindi, Japanese, Korean, Spanish, and many more, ensuring a global reach. However, enthusiasts of fictional languages will find conversational Klingon is not part of the curriculum.
Beyond standard courses, the event includes hackathons, self-paced learning modules, challenges, community forums, and meetups. Additionally, Microsoft partners have the opportunity to present their AI-focused training and products. Beginners can explore topics like "Using AI for everyday tasks," designed to help understand generative AI, its applications at home and work, effective prompt writing, and finding useful resources.
For advanced learners, there are courses such as the one on Microsoft Fabric, Microsoft’s data analytics platform. This particular challenge aids in preparing for the DP-700 certification. While the course is free during the Skills Fest, the certification exam itself costs approximately $165 and is separate from the fest.
How to Register
You can sign up for this valuable free training from a leading tech company on the official Microsoft AI Skills Fest registration page. Given the relevance of AI, it’s an opportunity worth exploring.
Exciting Prizes and Discounts
Participants also have the chance to win valuable prizes. By entering the Microsoft AI Skills Fest Challenge Sweepstakes, you could be one of 50,000 winners of a free certification voucher through weekly drawings. This initiative is part of a broader trend, similar to how Google offers AI certification for business leaders with free training.
Additionally, GitHub provides a 50% discount on its new GitHub Copilot certification exam. After completing the relevant GitHub Learn module, participants receive a discount code valid until May 28, 2025. The exam must be completed by June 30, 2025.
A Glimpse into the Skills Fest Experience
The author explored several offerings, starting with "Minecraft Education - AI Adventurers." Described as a charming series of short videos, it's an excellent resource for explaining AI concepts to children. For more on AI tools, see how a new OpenAI release saved the author days of work.
Another course reviewed was "Building applications with GitHub Copilot agent mode," a 45-minute YouTube tutorial. Presenter Chris Noring demonstrated creating a fitness tracker app using GitHub Copilot’s agent mode in VS Code within GitHub Codespaces, integrating React, Django, and MongoDB. The author found this session highly informative.
The author also took "AI for Organizational Leaders," a LinkedIn Learning course. This nearly hour-long class covers AI technology details, business implications of generative AI, strategic integration, and crucial aspects like pitfalls and limitations. It includes quizzes and a final exam, culminating in a free certificate. Access might require a LinkedIn account or entry via the Skills Fest. It is worth noting that many Skills Fest resources, such as the Minecraft series and the GitHub YouTube video, are not gated and can be accessed via direct links even after the event concludes.
Microsoft Sets a Guinness World Record
Microsoft kicked off the Skills Fest in April aiming for a Guinness World Record, and they succeeded. They set a new record for "most users to take an online multi-level artificial intelligence lesson in 24 hours," surpassing the previous record of 46,045 participants held by GUVI Geek Network Private Limited and the Government of Uttar Pradesh, India.
With an impressive 126,151 participants, Microsoft and the Skills Fest attendees broke the previous record. Jeana Jorgensen, Corporate Vice President at Microsoft Learning, stated, "The record is a tribute to every person who is investing their time and energy to learn a new AI skill or help others build their AI expertise."
