Pakistan Minister Spreads AI Hoax Global Mockery Follows
A fake AI image, widely circulated on Pakistan's social media handles, was quoted by Dar in Pakistan's Senate.
Pakistan has once again become a subject of international ridicule after its Foreign Minister, Ishaq Dar, shared an AI-generated fake image. This image, designed to mimic the front page of a British newspaper, incorrectly praised the Pakistan Air Force. The fabricated front page, attributed to The Daily Telegraph, falsely proclaimed, “PAF is the undisputed king of the skies.”
Fake AI Headline Presented as Official Statement
An AI-created fake image, which gained traction on Pakistani social media, was cited by Dar during a session in Pakistan's Senate. He announced, "British newspaper Daily Telegraph front page has said that Pakistan Air Force is the undisputed king of the skies," reportedly to applause from other Senate members. The claim was quickly challenged by journalists and fact-checkers. They confirmed that The Daily Telegraph had not published any such article. The purported front page cannot be found in the newspaper's archives or on its website. Social media, including a post by WaseyNaik on X (formerly Twitter), also flagged the minister's speech.
AI Suspected in Image Fabrication
Numerous social media accounts pointed out that the image appears to be the work of generative artificial intelligence. These AI tools are capable of mimicking the design and style of well-known newspapers. Observers noted several inconsistencies in the image's layout and fonts, further suggesting it was not authentic.
Pakistan Foreign Office Remains Silent
Even after being exposed for disseminating false information, Foreign Minister Dar has not issued a clarification regarding his statement. Pakistan’s foreign ministry has also not commented on the incident.
Pattern of Sharing Unverified Claims
This incident isn't the first instance of a high-ranking Pakistani official using unverified social media content to support false claims. Previously, after an Indian airstrike on terror locations in Pakistan, the country’s Defence Minister alleged that the Pakistan Air Force had downed Indian fighter jets. When asked for evidence by international media, he stated, “The proof is all over social media.” This comment received widespread criticism, with defence analysts and global observers describing it as an irresponsible and flippant remark from a minister responsible for military matters.
