Artificial intelligence was a topic of discussion for years, yet its impact on daily life remained minimal for most. This changed dramatically with the arrival of ChatGPT.

The launch of ChatGPT also catapulted OpenAI, previously known mainly within tech circles, into global awareness. This technology company, however, has been instrumental in shaping AI development for over a decade.

The Genesis of OpenAI

OpenAI was established in 2015 by a group of visionaries including Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Ilya Sutskever, and Greg Brockman, alongside Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, and Wojciech Zaremba. Initially a non-profit, its mission was to "advance digital intelligence in the way that is most likely to benefit humanity as a whole."

Securing an initial $1.1 billion in investment, OpenAI assembled a team of AI specialists focused on developing artificial generative intelligence responsibly. The core objectives were to encourage collaboration and ensure their research outcomes were globally accessible.

The organization quickly advanced in deep learning and reinforcement learning, leading to the 2016 introduction of OpenAI Gym, a toolkit designed for creating and benchmarking reinforcement learning algorithms.

In 2018, OpenAI showcased its progress with the OpenAI Five project. This initiative featured five distinct AI agents trained to play a complex video game, demonstrating their ability to collaborate effectively despite their individual nature.

That same year, Elon Musk stepped down from OpenAI's board, citing potential conflicts of interest related to Tesla's advancements in self-driving car technology.

A Novel Financial Structure The Capped Profit Model

To enhance its fundraising capabilities without abandoning its non-profit core, OpenAI adopted an innovative 'capped-profit' model. This structure enabled investors to receive a limited return on their investment in a for-profit arm, while the original non-profit organization retained complete operational control.

Venture capitalist Chamath Palihapitiya discussed this unique setup in a 2023 blog post detailing OpenAI's structure.

The ChatGPT Era Begins

OpenAI truly entered the global spotlight in December 2022 with the launch of ChatGPT-3. This large language model demonstrated an uncanny ability to understand human text and generate remarkably human-like responses. Its popularity surged, attracting 100 million users within just two months.

This groundbreaking release followed other significant AI tools from OpenAI, including Dall-E for image generation and Codex for programming assistance.

Shortly after ChatGPT-3's public release, OpenAI introduced a subscription service for the more advanced ChatGPT-4, which expanded capabilities to include image and voice analysis alongside text processing.

As 2023 drew to a close, OpenAI faced significant internal challenges. The most notable event was the unexpected ouster of CEO Sam Altman on November 17, along with other key executives.

This decision led to high-profile resignations, including that of co-founder and President Greg Brockman. However, the situation reversed quickly; Altman was reinstated as CEO just five days later, following strong protests from investors, including Microsoft, and employees.

In the subsequent year, OpenAI achieved a historic milestone by completing the largest fundraising round ever recorded. The company secured $7.26 billion, catapulting its valuation to $172 billion and solidifying its position as a leading AI firm.
