ChatGPT Can Replace These Three Common Smartphone Apps

While your smartphone is packed with countless applications, most of us rely on a select few for daily tasks. Many essential apps are built-in, designed to do one thing well. However, the rise of powerful AI tools like ChatGPT is changing the game, potentially reducing your need for some of these single-purpose apps.
ChatGPT can often perform these tasks more effectively, faster, or both. This isn't to say you should delete all your other apps immediately, but you might find yourself increasingly using ChatGPT for tasks you once switched apps for.
From Notes App to AI Collaboration

Many people use notes apps extensively for everything from grocery lists and personal reminders to jotting down ideas and interview details. While efforts can be made to stay organized, sifting through older notes often requires tedious keyword searches.
Now, you can simply tell ChatGPT your thoughts or what you need to remember. Instead of just passively storing your words, it can actively assist. For instance, if you list groceries, you can ask it for meal ideas based on that list. ChatGPT also helps organize notes into different categories—personal plans, professional notes, or even dream journals—making them easy to retrieve. It also functions as a smart reminder. If you say, “Remind me to call Sam next week for dinner plans,” ChatGPT will not only remind you but also provide context and suggest local restaurants.
Your New AI Language Learning Partner
Learning a new language independently can be challenging. While numerous apps aim to make you fluent, sometimes the goal is simply to achieve a basic conversational level, as is the author's case with French.
The gamified approach of many language apps doesn't suit everyone. Practicing with ChatGPT can be more effective for certain learning styles. You can set up a scenario, like "Pretend you’re a Parisian café owner and I’m a lost tourist with very bad French." A conversation can then unfold, for example, about pastries and coffee. If you make a mistake, ChatGPT can correct you with a touch of humor, much like an actual café owner might. This personality and flexibility create a more relaxed and, for some, more effective learning environment.
Smarter Calculations with Contextual AI

The calculator is a fundamental app, frequently used for tasks like figuring out restaurant bills. Specialized apps exist for calculating tips or splitting complex bills, but they can falter with nuanced situations. Imagine a dinner bill for six people where one person didn't drink alcohol, and another is paying their tip in cash.
ChatGPT handles these complex details with ease because you can explain the situation in natural language. Even better, you can show it the bill by taking a picture and asking, “How should this be split five ways if one person isn’t paying for wine and another didn’t have dessert? What's the appropriate tip for each person?” This is far simpler than trying to break down the problem into a series of numerical inputs for a standard calculator.
While there's a certain comfort in familiar apps that have served us well, realizing that ChatGPT can handle these tasks—and often more—might make you comfortable letting your old calculator and other specific-use apps gather a bit of digital dust.
