The Rise of AI in Patient Health Queries

Artificial intelligence tools like ChatGPT and Bard are quickly changing how people look for health information. These AI platforms use large language models to give conversational and understanding answers to health questions. Many users find them better and more empathetic than standard search engines or even doctors. This move from old search ways to AI chat is set to shake up healthcare, making drug companies wonder how to keep up.

Accuracy Under Scrutiny AI Citations Found Wanting

Patients are using AI more and more to get detailed health information without talking to doctors. Some individuals known as biohackers are even using AI to understand their personal health data like blood test results. AI chat platforms give short, conversational answers that build trust, unlike search engines that just list websites. But there are worries about wrong information. A new study by Brand Medicine International found that half the sources ChatGPT gave for cancer research questions were wrong. All sources from Bard were also incorrect. Julia Walsh, the CEO of Brand Medicine International, pointed out that these AI tools often use web content that might be hidden or restricted. They can also confidently give wrong information, a problem known as AI hallucinations.

Drug companies find it hard to make sure that AI platforms provide correct, locally useful, and science-backed answers. Walsh stressed that rules need to change to fight wrong information. This would let pharma companies publish accurate online information that AI systems can use. A workshop with different industries, led by Walsh, suggested some steps. These include setting up groups to improve digital health understanding, changing learning materials so AI can use them, and creating special teams in pharma companies to deal with AI changes.

Harnessing AI Opportunities for Better Healthcare

Even with these problems, there are ways to use AI for good in healthcare. For example, Google’s Med-PaLM 2 has shown it can answer medical questions very accurately, like an expert taking U.S. medical exams. Drug companies could use similar AI to teach patients better. They could create special chatbots that give reliable answers suited to how much each person understands about health.

The Path Forward Collaboration and Adaptation

Also, combining doctor appointments with quick AI information could make patient care smoother and reduce the risk of wrong information. Leaders in the field say it is very important for everyone to work together. This includes drug companies, patient support groups, rule-makers, and AI companies, so they can handle these big changes well.

As searching for information becomes more like talking to an AI, drug companies need to be quick and ready. They must change their plans to make sure correct information is shared, dealing with both the dangers and the good chances that come with this new technology.
