Apple may not be synonymous with artificial intelligence yet but the tech giant is reportedly diligently developing a range of AI models aimed at competing with leading platforms like ChatGPT and Gemini.

Apple's Ambitious AI Model Development

According to a report from Mark Gurman at Bloomberg, Apple is actively testing AI models ranging from three billion to an impressive 150 billion parameters. These could potentially be integrated into iPhones in the future. The significantly larger 150 billion parameter model is designed to be cloud-based, offering substantially more power than Apple's current on-device AI, which operates with around three billion parameters.

Performance Benchmarks and Internal Hurdles

Initial testing, as per the report, suggests Apple's AI capabilities are comparable to recent versions of ChatGPT. Despite this progress, the company remains cautious about the AI's propensity for "hallucinations" – a common challenge in the AI field. Furthermore, internal "philosophical differences" among Apple executives regarding AI features are reportedly causing some delays in development.

WWDC Expectations and Third Party Integrations

Despite advancements in these powerful models, industry watchers do not anticipate their debut at the upcoming WWDC event. Instead, rumors suggest a continued focus on integrating third-party AI models into Siri. Following last year's addition of ChatGPT support, Apple is expected to announce support for Google Gemini and Perplexity AI this year.

The tech world is keenly watching to see what AI-related announcements Apple will make at WWDC. Regardless of Apple's specific unveilings, Wall Street maintains high expectations for significant AI advancements from all major tech players. This follows Google's substantial AI announcements at I/O earlier this summer and the recent news of OpenAI partnering with former Apple design chief Jony Ive to develop AI hardware products.

The Evolving Saga of Siri and Apple Intelligence

Anticipation remains high for the AI-enhanced Siri that was previewed at WWDC 2024. This upgraded Siri was intended to be a cornerstone of the initial Apple Intelligence rollout but faced delays, leaving users with a more limited set of AI tools. While expected with the next major iOS release, there's speculation it might arrive sooner, given its original promise as an iOS 18 feature.

Users have found the current ChatGPT integration within Siri can sometimes lead to frustrating experiences. Traditional Siri responses can be less helpful, creating confusion about whether an answer comes from Siri's native capabilities or an integrated AI. Apple will ideally address these user experience issues in forthcoming OS updates.

A prior report from Bloomberg indicated that a dedicated team in Zurich is secretly developing a completely new AI-driven Siri. This new version aims to replace the current hybrid system. The timeline for this advanced Siri's release, or even if it will be publicly launched, is uncertain. However, its successful deployment could make third-party plugins like ChatGPT and Gemini for Siri obsolete.

Other Potential AI Enhancements at WWDC25

Mark Gurman also suggests that WWDC25 might introduce several smaller AI-driven features. These could include an updated Translate app featuring AirPods integration, a novel battery management mode, and "AI-powered" enhancements to the Photos and Safari applications.

Alongside AI developments, Apple is reportedly preparing for a significant design refresh across all its software platforms. This focus on design could mean that WWDC25 might be lighter on major AI revelations, prioritizing instead visual changes and standard feature updates for its operating systems.
