OpenAI Addresses ChatGPT Service Interruption

OpenAI announced on Tuesday that it has implemented a fix for a partial outage that was disrupting ChatGPT's functionality. The company confirmed it has identified the root cause and is actively working on resolving the problem. However, OpenAI also acknowledged that the AI-powered chatbot continued to experience degraded performance, with some users still encountering issues as reported on DownDetector.com.

Understanding the Scope and Timeline of the Outage

According to OpenAI's official status page, issues began around 3 a.m. EDT, affecting its application programming interfaces (APIs), ChatGPT, and the AI image-generating service Sora. Users experienced elevated error rates and latency across these services.

On Tuesday morning, DownDetector.com data showed over 1,900 user reports regarding OpenAI's services. A significant 92% of these reports specifically pointed to problems with ChatGPT. The volume of outage reports decreased to below 400 by just before noon.

By approximately 9 a.m., OpenAI announced it had identified the root cause of the widespread issue and was in the process of implementing a mitigation strategy to address the outages.

OpenAI reported improved performance for its API and ChatGPT around 11:42 a.m. Subsequently, at 1:20 p.m., the status for ChatGPT was updated from a partial outage to degraded performance, following the implementation of a mitigation.

At the time of the initial reports, OpenAI had not provided an immediate response to requests for comment.

The Scale of ChatGPTs User Base

The impact of such outages is significant, considering ChatGPT's vast user base. According to OpenAI's data from March 31, the platform boasts an estimated more than 500 million active weekly users.

A History of Recent OpenAI Service Issues

This recent incident is not an isolated event for OpenAI's popular chatbot. In recent months, ChatGPT has experienced several disruptions. A similar outage occurred in March, where OpenAI noted increased error rates affecting ChatGPT, Sora, and other products; this peaked at over 1,100 reports on DownDetector.com and was resolved within hours. January also saw an outage due to elevated API error rates, which was similarly fixed in a few hours. More significant widespread issues were reported in December, with over 50,000 outage reports logged on DownDetector.com. That particular December outage, starting in the early afternoon, took more than six hours to resolve.
