Google, take note. OpenAI has significantly enhanced its ChatGPT search tool in an effort to attract more users, and early signs suggest this move could be successful.

OpenAI Unveils Enhanced ChatGPT Search Capabilities

In a recent support article published last Friday, OpenAI detailed an upgrade aimed at boosting the quality and performance of its search feature. Generally, ChatGPT search is now improved to deliver more thorough and current answers. OpenAI also stated that, based on their internal tests, users favored this updated search experience compared to the old one.

(Important Note: Ziff Davis, ZDNET's parent company, initiated a lawsuit against OpenAI in April 2025, claiming copyright infringement related to the training and operation of its AI systems.)

So, what are these preferred new features?

Key Improvements in the Latest ChatGPT Search Update

The updated ChatGPT search provides more intelligent responses, shows a better understanding of user queries, and delivers more complete answers. The AI's search mode is now more capable of managing extended conversations, enabling deeper topic exploration. Additionally, it follows instructions more effectively, particularly in longer exchanges, a change OpenAI claims significantly cuts down on repetitive answers.

Further enhancements include the ability to initiate several searches simultaneously and the option to search the web for details about an uploaded image.

Potential Considerations and Minor Issues

Despite the improvements, there are a couple of points to note with the new search. You might observe that the AI provides longer answers than before. In some situations, ChatGPT could show its "chain of thought" reasoning process, even for basic searches. This involves the AI breaking down a query into smaller parts before forming a final response. While useful for complex issues, this might be unnecessary for simple questions.

As always, OpenAI advises that ChatGPT can make errors and recommends users verify its responses.

ChatGPT Search Versus Google A Growing Rivalry

Challenging Google, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT search last October. This feature offers current information and includes links to the online sources it uses. The search function activates automatically based on your prompt, or you can enable it manually by clicking the search button.

So, is ChatGPT Search a better option than Google? When comparing ChatGPT search to traditional Google Search, some argue yes. However, Google is also advancing its AI capabilities, integrating Gemini into its standard search tool. Google now offers an AI mode where it summarizes results from multiple sources and can participate in conversational exchanges.

Personal Experience and Final Thoughts

After testing both ChatGPT search and Google Search with AI Mode on similar topics, both proved capable. However, the way ChatGPT presented information and supported a conversational exploration of subjects was generally preferred by the original author. As OpenAI keeps improving ChatGPT search, users are no longer limited to Google. It is advisable to try both search tools to find out which one aligns best with your preferences.
