Google Gemini Gets Smarter With Automated Task Scheduling

Google’s AI assistant, Gemini, is becoming more proactive. A new feature called "Scheduled Actions" is now available for some users, allowing the AI to automatically handle recurring or time specific tasks.

This update, announced during Google I/O, is rolling out to both Android and iOS users. With Scheduled Actions, you can tell Gemini precisely what you need it to do and when. Whether it's brainstorming blog ideas weekly, getting a daily news summary, or a one time reminder for an event, Gemini can manage it without repeated prompts.

What Are Scheduled Actions?

Similar to the Tasks feature in ChatGPT, Scheduled Actions in the Gemini app allow you to automate prompts. For example, you can ask Gemini:

  • “Send me a calendar and email summary every weekday at 8 a.m.”
  • “Give me 5 blog post ideas every Sunday.”
  • “Remind me on Tuesday about my 2 p.m. dentist appointment.”

Once a recurring task is set, you can manage it anytime from the Scheduled Actions page in the Gemini settings. This feature enhances Gemini's competitiveness against ChatGPT’s memory capabilities and third party integrations. Google states this will provide a more personalized, hands off experience to help users stay informed, inspired, and on track.

How Does This Compare to ChatGPT?

ChatGPT Tasks also allows users to schedule various items, from daily reminders to appointments, directly within the ChatGPT app, with notifications sent both in app and via email.

However, Gemini's Scheduled Actions stands out because it's built directly into the app and integrates with the Google ecosystem. This allows users to automate recurring prompts and receive proactive updates without needing workarounds or leaving Google Workspace. For those who frequently use Gmail, Google Docs, and other Google services, this could be a significant advantage.

Availability

If you don't see the Scheduled Tasks page yet, note that it's not immediately available to everyone.

The feature is currently rolling out to users with a Google AI Premium subscription or a qualifying Google Workspace business or education plan. This means users on lower subscription tiers might need to continue using ChatGPT Tasks for now, as the Scheduled Actions option won't be visible to them.

Considering Google's tendency to eventually offer some of their best features for free, it's likely that wider access will be available in the future.

Why It Matters

Gemini has been evolving rapidly, incorporating new live conversation features, video generation capabilities, and deeper integration with Google apps. This latest Scheduled Actions feature is a promising development that many users have anticipated, offering true automation without needing third party tools or complex scripting.

Scheduled Actions effectively transforms Gemini into a personal AI scheduler. It goes beyond simply responding to prompts by remembering to act on them proactively. This development indicates a step closer to more autonomous AI. If you've ever wished for an AI assistant to be more like a real assistant, this is a significant move in that direction, though currently dependent on having the right monthly subscription.
