Google Photos just gained a brand new AI Powered editor and easy Album sharing with QR codes. The platform is celebrating its tenth anniversary with a significant update, introducing a suite of powerful new features designed to enhance your photo management and editing experience.

Key Updates at a Glance

  • A new editing experience is arriving in Google Photos.
  • Features previously exclusive to Pixel 9 will be available to all users.
  • The update includes powerful artificial intelligence tools.

Revolutionizing Photo Editing with AI

Perhaps the most significant upgrade in this celebration is Google’s new photo editor. This revamped editor brings together a range of AI-powered functions, making some advanced capabilities, previously available only to Pixel 9-series owners, accessible to a wider audience. As Google states, the editor has been completely redesigned to be simpler to use while incorporating more AI-powered features.

Key AI editing tools include:

  • Auto Frame: This feature intelligently suggests various ways to crop your photos. It automatically uses generative fill technology where necessary to extend the image, ensuring it fits the required shape seamlessly.
  • Reimagine: Dive into creativity with Reimagine. This tool allows you to add novel and artistic elements to your pictures simply by describing them with text prompts. You can learn more about how to Reimagine your photos here.

Additionally, a new AI Enhance feature offers a one-tap solution for photo improvement. This AI-powered edit deploys multiple tools simultaneously to generate three new versions of your image, from which you can then select your favorite.

The editor's user interface has also undergone a radical redesign. While this new look may take a little getting used to, Google has designed it to make editing more intuitive by suggesting the best edits for your specific photo. For example, if you draw around an object to select it, Google Photos will automatically display the tools most relevant to your selection, streamlining the editing process.

The new Google Photos editor will begin rolling out in June for Android devices running version 8 and higher. iOS users can look forward to these features arriving later this year.

Simplified Album Sharing with QR Codes

Google is also making it much easier to create and share photo albums with the introduction of shareable QR codes. Anyone can scan these QR codes to join a shared album.

Google suggests this feature will be particularly useful for events. You can print out the QR codes and display them, allowing anyone present to instantly view or add photos to your group album simply by scanning the code. This innovation significantly reduces the effort required to share albums, as there's no longer a need to manually send links or invitations to multiple recipients.

The new QR code album sharing feature has already started rolling out. Some users may already see it in their Google Photos Android app, although it's not yet available via photos.google.com on the Web. This convenient sharing method also works for Google’s automatically generated "Moments," which can now be shared in precisely the same way.

You can see this QR code feature in action in a video by Android Authority, where it was first spotted last month prior to its official release.

A Decade of Memories: Google Photos Turns Ten

The roots of Google Photos extend back further than its official ten-year mark. The journey began with Picasa Web Albums in 2006. Google then migrated its online photo service to Google+ Photos in 2011, before the official birth of Google Photos in 2015.

Many users were initially drawn to Google Photos due to its offer of unlimited free High-Quality photo storage—a compelling proposition that Google eventually rescinded in 2021.
