Boost Samsung TV Picture Quality With These Settings

So, you've just unboxed your brand new TV, excited for its visual prowess. In this age of advanced TV technology, it's easy to assume it will look fantastic right out of the box. Plugging it in without a second glance at the default settings is a common move, but it's a significant oversight.

Many of us are guilty of this, and it's understandable. Most consumers don't alter basic TV settings. Even if your TV isn't new, you might have never ventured into its configuration menus.

For Samsung TVs, specifically, a few adjustments can markedly improve your viewing experience, making everything from movies to shows more engaging. Here are six tips to help you do just that.

1. Disable Eco Mode for Full Brightness

Almost all modern TVs come with an "Eco Mode" enabled by default. This feature aims to reduce power consumption by dimming the TV's brightness and lowering its contrast. However, a recent study indicated that Eco Mode might save as little as $7 annually on electricity bills – less than two cents a day. Whether "eco" stands for economy or ecology, the savings are not substantial, and there are more effective ways to be environmentally conscious. For optimal picture quality, disabling this mode is recommended.

To turn off Eco Mode on your Samsung TV, press the gear button on your remote to open settings. Then navigate: All Settings > General and Privacy > Power and Energy Saving > Energy Saving Solution. Finally, toggle Energy Saving Solution to off.

2. Turn Off Brightness Optimization for Consistent Viewing

While you're in the Power and Energy Saving menu, it's a good idea to also disable Brightness Optimization by toggling it off.

Many TVs feature optical sensors that detect ambient room brightness and light temperature, automatically adjusting the picture. While this sounds smart, it doesn't always work reliably. The feature can sometimes result in a subpar image, especially in rooms where lighting conditions change, such as during a sunny day with passing clouds.

3. Choose a Film Centric Picture Mode

For the best viewing experience, picture modes like Movie, Cinema, or Filmmaker are generally recommended. These modes strive to present content as the creator intended, offering the most accurate and faithful image. By minimizing unnecessary image processing, they also reduce the risk of introducing visual artifacts or other quality issues.

Navigate to All Settings > Picture Mode. Experiment with Movie, Cinema, or Filmmaker modes to see which you prefer.

The default Standard mode often produces a cooler, bluer color temperature. TVs also frequently include a Vivid mode (which Samsung calls Dynamic mode). It's best to avoid Dynamic and Sports modes, as they can make colors overly intense and give the entire picture a harsh, radiant look. Retailers often use these modes for display TVs because they make colors pop in bright storefronts.

4. Calibrate Brightness Levels for Your Content

Finding the perfect brightness level depends on the content you're watching. While High Dynamic Range (HDR) is increasingly common, a vast library of films and shows exists in Standard Dynamic Range (SDR). Fortunately, you can easily adjust brightness for both.

For SDR content: Open an app like Prime Video but don't play a video yet. Go to All Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > Brightness. (Note: On some Samsung models, this might be under Picture Setup.) Adjust the sliders to find what you consider the ideal SDR brightness.

To adjust HDR brightness: You'll first need HDR content. YouTube TV is a good source, as many videos are labeled, or you can search for "HDR video."

The brightness level is subjective, but you'll notice a clear difference between SDR and HDR. Many find HDR looks best with brightness maxed out, while SDR might look better at a lower setting.

5. Experiment with Local Dimming Options

Another setting affecting brightness is Local Dimming, which Samsung TVs offer in three options. Go to All Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > Local Dimming.

Try out Low, Standard, and High settings to see which you prefer. The Low setting can provide less halo and blooming around bright objects on dark backgrounds. On Samsung TVs, some prefer High as it keeps bright points luminous without significant halos.

After adjusting Local Dimming, you might want to revisit your brightness settings for SDR and HDR content to ensure they're still optimal.

6. Disable Motion Smoothing for a Cinematic Feel

Most movies are filmed at 24 frames per second (FPS). Motion Smoothing technology interpolates extra frames into 24 FPS footage to reduce motion blur and judder. This can be beneficial for content like live sports, which is typically shot at 30 FPS.

However, Motion Smoothing, another common default, is known for creating the "soap opera effect." This term aptly describes the overly smooth, video like quality it imparts, resembling a live broadcast. If you're aiming for an immersive cinematic experience, you likely don't want to feel like you're on set with the cast and crew.

To adjust this, go to All Settings > Picture > Expert Settings > Picture Clarity Settings. (Note: On Samsung TVs, Motion Smoothing is often called Picture Clarity or Auto Motion Plus.)

From here, you can turn Picture Clarity (Motion Smoothing) off entirely or select Custom Settings. In Custom Settings, you can adjust sliders for Blur Reduction and Judder Reduction. You might increase these for watching sports or playing video games. For a traditional filmic aesthetic, turning off Motion Smoothing is generally the best approach.
