If your daily Wordle routine has become a bit stale, you might be looking for a change. I discovered I could create my own word puzzle games using Artificial Intelligence, and it's a game-changer. Forget being restricted to a single puzzle daily; now, I have an unlimited array of custom games tailored to my skill level.

The best part? You don't need any coding skills. Modern AI chatbots such as ChatGPT, Claude, and Gemini can produce fully functional puzzle games within minutes. I put all three to the test to see which AI could generate the most captivating alternatives to the popular Wordle game.

It turns out AI is surprisingly adept at crafting games that can keep you entertained during coffee breaks, commutes, or any time you need a quick mental workout.

Here’s how you can build your own collection of word games, moving far beyond the daily Wordle restriction.

Create Quick Puzzles with ChatGPT

To get started, log into ChatGPT and use this straightforward prompt: "Create a Wordle-style game for us to play. I have 5 guesses to pick the right word." The AI's response is direct and effective, providing a functional word-guessing game you can play immediately within the chat interface.

ChatGPT’s method is intuitive and user-friendly, allowing you to dive straight into playing without any complicated setup. It generates a clean, text-based version where you input your guesses and receive clear feedback regarding correct letters and their positions.

The interaction feels natural: you simply type your guess, and ChatGPT replies with helpful clues about which letters are correct and where they should be. While it doesn't have the visual appeal of colored tiles or the interactive elements that make Wordle engaging, ChatGPT makes up for it with clear, well-organized feedback that is easy to understand.

This option is perfect when you need a quick mental challenge during a break and want something that works without any fuss.

Get Interactive Games with Claude

Next, head over to Claude and use the exact same prompt: "Create a Wordle-style game for us to play. I have 5 guesses to pick the right word." Claude adopts a completely different strategy, actually constructing a functional game interface directly within the chat using its artifact system.

This was, by far, my preferred option among the three. Claude creates a fully interactive game complete with visual feedback, colored tiles, and a proper game board that updates in real-time as you make your guesses. Using this on the mobile app makes it feel like you are playing a genuine Wordle alternative, not just conversing with an AI.

The interface is clean, responsive, and successfully captures that satisfying experience of seeing your guesses populate the grid with the familiar green, yellow, and gray color-coding. It serves as an excellent alternative because it provides the complete Wordle experience without the limitation of only one puzzle per day.

Explore Gemini for Basic Game Creation and Code

Log into Gemini and try the same prompt. With Gemini, you will receive the most minimalist version of the three, featuring very few visual elements and a highly basic text-based interaction. While ChatGPT included some emojis to enhance visual interest, Gemini keeps its presentation extremely plain.

However, Gemini does provide one unique benefit — it actively suggests using its Canvas feature to generate actual code for a standalone game. This makes it potentially valuable if you aim to create something you can share with friends or host on a different platform.

The main challenge with Gemini's interpretation of a Wordle-style game is its occasional tendency to make errors that can disrupt the game experience, such as incorrectly stating that "fruit" is not a five-letter word.

Once these initial hiccups are overcome, Gemini performs well and does precisely what is expected, delivering a functional word game that captures the core Wordle mechanics, just without the added frills.

And the Best AI for Game Creation Is Claude

It's likely no surprise. Claude delivered the most polished and interactive experience, one that genuinely felt like playing a real game rather than simply discussing one.

Both ChatGPT and Gemini offered functional alternatives, but Claude’s capability to create a proper visual interface with real-time updates places it in a different league for this type of task.

Frankly, Claude is often underrated as an AI assistant. It consistently provides more thoughtful and nuanced responses and excels at creative assignments like this game creation challenge.

While much of the discussion revolves around ChatGPT, Claude quietly surpasses it in areas crucial for everyday practical use, and I have been quite open about how it is my favorite AI model currently available.

Its ability to construct interactive experiences directly within the chat interface is just another demonstration of its greater capabilities than many realize.

Anthropic continues to enhance Claude's capabilities. Be sure to explore Claude’s latest addition: its free voice mode.
