Unlock ChatGPTs Full Potential With This Universal Prompt
ChatGPT offers a seemingly endless ocean of possibilities. However, a tool capable of everything from coding a website from scratch to explaining complex space concepts to a child can naturally be intricate.
With this complexity and the completely open-ended nature of prompts, figuring out where to begin with ChatGPT can be daunting. Yet, some prompts stand out for their universal applicability.
Having used ChatGPT since its public debut, I've discovered a prompt that consistently delivers excellent results. More importantly, it performs well on any ChatGPT model and can even be adapted for other AI chatbots.
Unveiling the Master Prompt for Superior AI Interaction
This powerful prompt operates in two simple stages. The first step is to prepare ChatGPT. To do this, input the following text into the chatbox:
I’m going to ask you a question in my next message. Before responding, I want you to think through your answer carefully using all tools and reasoning available to you.
- Plan silently: Map out the question, consider relevant facts, outline your reasoning path, and note any assumptions or missing information.
- Verify: Use your internal tools—code interpreter, web search (if available), and data analysis—to fact-check key details and ensure accuracy.
- Clarify: If the request is ambiguous, pause and ask for clarification before continuing.
- Respond: Once ready, write a clear, detailed, and well-organized answer.
Do not include your thought process—just provide the best, most accurate answer possible.
Only respond when you’ve done all of the above.
In response, ChatGPT will acknowledge its readiness for your query. From this point, simply submit your request as you normally would.
How This Preparatory Command Transforms ChatGPT's Output
While you can pose questions directly, using this preparatory prompt encourages ChatGPT to consider your request more thoroughly, leading to a more detailed and nuanced answer.
Crucially, it prevents ChatGPT from guessing or generating a superficial answer, especially if your initial prompt is somewhat ambiguous. Instead, it will follow the instruction to seek clarification if needed.
The Prompt in Action: A Travel Planning Showdown
I tested this method by asking ChatGPT to plan a five day trip to Spain, first with the preparatory prompt and then without it.
When using the extended prompt, ChatGPT invested more effort. It searched the internet for popular restaurants and prime attractions in Spain. This resulted in a highly specific itinerary, complete with links to reviews and booking websites, a list of helpful tips, and a rough budget broken down by trip segments.
In contrast, the unprepared version of ChatGPT still provided an itinerary, outlining a five day journey through Spain with explanations for why each location was worth visiting. However, it was noticeably less detailed and lacked the backing of internet research or deeper analysis.
Smart Prompting: When and How to Use It Effectively
This prompt yields the best results when used with versions of ChatGPT that excel in reasoning, such as GPT 4o. While it remains beneficial with the base version of ChatGPT by allowing the model more consideration time, the base model cannot fully leverage the extended thinking period.
It's also worth noting that this prompt isn't always necessary. For instance, if your request is very simple, the preamble won’t add significant benefit. If I ask ChatGPT to explain how an air fryer works, it doesn’t require extensive time to think through the prompt, nor does it need to utilize its other tools to process such a straightforward request.
