It was a Thursday afternoon like any other, until suddenly, it wasn't. A significant and widespread outage swept across the digital landscape, affecting multiple major online services and leaving users frustrated and disconnected. Platforms like Spotify, Google, Discord, and many more experienced serious service disruptions, leading to a flood of reports on outage trackers like DownDetector. Users encountered a frustrating array of problems, from being unable to log in, to experiencing endless loading screens and complete app crashes.

What Happened A Wave of Digital Disruptions

On Thursday afternoon, the internet seemed to hiccup. Reports quickly surfaced indicating that several key online platforms were down or experiencing severe issues. Google services, the ever-popular music streaming platform Spotify, and communication hub Discord were among the first big names mentioned. Outage tracking website DownDetector became the go-to source for many, rapidly accumulating tens of thousands of reports from users who found themselves unable to access their favorite or essential digital tools. The issues varied but commonly included login failures, inability to load content, and applications crashing unexpectedly.

Spotify Silenced Music Streaming Grinds to a Halt

Spotify users were particularly vocal about the disruption. The platform saw over 40,000 user-submitted outage reports on DownDetector at the peak of the event, underscoring the severity of the problem. Many users reported they couldn't access their carefully curated playlists, stream any music, or even get the app to open. Some encountered a technical message, a "JWT error," when trying to use the website, which stated: "Audiences in JWT are not allowed." The mobile app frequently displayed a generic connection error. Despite the scale of the issue, Spotify had not issued an immediate official comment during the height of the outage.

Googles Cloud Stumbles The Impact of IAM Issues

Google Cloud also faced significant challenges. The company reported widespread service disruptions across multiple products, attributing the problem to an ongoing Identity and Access Management (IAM) issue. This outage began earlier, at 1:51 a.m. ET on Thursday. The IAM problem affected a range of Google Cloud services, including Cloud Storage, Cloud Bigtable, Cloud Workstations, and Vertex AI Search. According to Google's service health dashboard, the impact was global, with affected regions spanning North America, Europe, Asia, and beyond, including major tech hubs like Tokyo, London, São Paulo, and Sydney. Businesses and individual users relying on these cloud services found themselves struggling to access key applications due to API request failures, with no immediate workaround. Google's engineering team confirmed they were actively investigating and apologized for the disruption to global customers.

OpenAIs Recent Woes A Separate Incident

While OpenAI and its popular AI tool ChatGPT also saw a small number of outage reports on Thursday (around 350), this appeared to be minor compared to a more significant outage the company had faced just two days prior. On Tuesday, ChatGPT experienced a major disruption, leaving many users unable to access the platform. OpenAI acknowledged that earlier issue, citing high error rates and slow response times, and had reported identifying the problem by late afternoon Tuesday, though system recovery continued to cause some performance lags.

The Ripple Effect Other Platforms Caught in the Outage

The digital domino effect was clear as numerous other platforms also reported issues on Thursday. The list on DownDetector was extensive and varied, including:

  • Communication tools like Discord and Google Meet
  • Social media such as Snapchat
  • AI platforms like Character AI and Claude
  • Gaming services including Pokémon Trading Card Game and Rocket League
  • Streaming services like FuboTV and Vimeo
  • Business and productivity tools such as Cloudflare, Box, MailChimp, Microsoft Azure, and Shopify
  • Other services like Etsy, Google Nest, and UPS.

It was not immediately clear if all these outages were directly linked or if some were coincidental, but the sheer number painted a picture of a challenging day for internet stability.

Resolution and Recovery

Thankfully, the digital storm began to subside for most platforms around 3 p.m. ET, as services started to come back online. While Spotify's reported issues on DownDetector dipped slightly from its peak of over 46,000 to around 43,000 in the late afternoon, some users still experienced lingering problems. As services were restored, users were generally advised to monitor the official status pages of the affected platforms for the latest updates. The event served as a stark reminder of how interconnected and reliant we are on these digital services.
