OpenAI Business Subscriptions Surge By One Million
OpenAI Business Subscriptions Hit New Milestone
OpenAI has reportedly seen a significant surge in its business clientele, adding 1 million paying subscribers since February. This growth catapulted their total number of business subscribers from two million in February to three million at present, as reported by Seeking Alpha on Wednesday, June 4, based on information from an OpenAI livestream. According to the report, this impressive figure encompasses subscribers to ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Team, and ChatGPT Edu.
Cross-Industry Adoption and Consumer Influence
Corroborating these figures, CNBC also reported the same subscriber numbers. In an interview with CNBC, OpenAI Chief Operating Officer Brad Lightcap highlighted that the company's business tools are gaining traction across diverse industries, notably including highly regulated sectors such as financial services and healthcare. Lightcap further noted, "There’s this really tight interconnect between the growth of ChatGPT as a consumer tool and its adoption in the enterprise and in business," as per the report.
Consistent Growth in Business Offerings
This recent surge builds on previous momentum. In September, OpenAI announced that it had acquired 1 million paying business users within the first year of launching its initial business offerings. Similar to the latest figures, that earlier milestone also included users across ChatGPT Enterprise, ChatGPT Team, and ChatGPT Edu. OpenAI's foray into business-specific products began with ChatGPT Enterprise in August 2023, followed by ChatGPT Team in January 2024, and most recently, ChatGPT Edu in May 2024. At that time, Lightcap stated, "From reshaping how students learn, to optimizing patient care and transforming how governments serve their citizens, AI is redefining how people work. We’re proud to help over a million paying business users work more productively, streamline operations and uncover new opportunities for innovation."
Generative AI Driving Productivity Gains
The trend of Generative AI becoming deeply embedded in daily work routines is further supported by the PYMNTS Intelligence report titled "GenAI: A Generational Look at AI Usage and Attitudes." This report highlighted that a significant 82% of workers utilizing GenAI on at least a weekly basis believe it enhances productivity.
Broader Surge in OpenAI User Engagement
Beyond the business sector, the adoption of OpenAI's products has seen rapid growth among other user categories as well. In April, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman revealed that the AI startup had reached approximately 800 million people, with its user base doubling within just a few weeks. "Something like 10% of the world uses our systems, now a lot," Altman commented, underscoring the company's extensive reach.
