AI Tools Including ChatGPT and Sora Hit by Outage

OpenAI's popular AI tools, including ChatGPT, the Sora image generator, and other services, experienced a significant outage on Tuesday. The company confirmed it was working to resolve the issues that left users unable to access these generative AI platforms.

Surge in Outage Reports

Early Tuesday morning, reports of service disruptions began to climb sharply, as noted by the website status tracker Downdetector. By approximately 8:00 a.m., Downdetector had received over 1,300 reports from users who could not access OpenAI's generative AI tools.

The majority of these reported problems - specifically 92% - were related to ChatGPT, OpenAI's widely used generative AI chatbot, according to Downdetector's data.

OpenAI's Response and Restoration Efforts

The widespread outage had persisted for about six hours as of around 9:00 a.m. Tuesday. OpenAI acknowledged the situation in a statement on its official site, confirming it was "experiencing issues."

The company later updated that it had "identified the root cause for the issue causing elevated errors" and that its teams were actively working on restoring full service to all users.
