OpenAI recently announced exciting new updates for its Canvas and Projects features within ChatGPT. The AI research firm, based in San Francisco, now allows users to download content created in Canvas in various file formats. A significant addition for developers is the ability to export code written in Canvas directly into its relevant file type. In parallel, OpenAI is also boosting its Projects feature, incorporating functionalities like deep research, voice mode, and more. Furthermore, users of the ChatGPT mobile app on both iOS and Android will gain the much-anticipated ability to upload files and switch AI models while working within a project.

ChatGPT Receives Multiple Feature Enhancements

According to an official announcement on X, OpenAI confirmed that users can now download content generated within ChatGPT's Canvas. The Canvas feature, initially launched as a preview in October 2024 and rolled out to all users in December 2024, functions as a versatile sandbox. This pop-up window within the chatbot interface enables users to perform inline edits, apply formatting, and make various modifications to both text and code.

Canvas Upgrades Downloadable Content and Code Export

This enhancement allows users to save their generated text in popular formats like PDF, Microsoft Word (.docx), and Markdown (.md). For those working with code, Canvas now supports direct export to specific file types, such as .py for Python, .js for JavaScript, and .sql for SQL. It's important to note that the Canvas feature is accessible to all ChatGPT users across the website, desktop applications, and mobile apps.

Projects Feature Gets a Major Boost

OpenAI is also significantly expanding the capabilities of its Projects feature. This tool helps users organize their work by creating chat folders where ChatGPT can maintain context from previous conversations, specific instructions, and uploaded files. It's worth noting that the Projects feature is currently an exclusive offering for paid subscribers of the ChatGPT platform.

In a separate announcement on X, OpenAI detailed further enhancements for Projects. The feature will now support deep research, enabling users to conduct thorough, multi-step investigations using public web sources. Additionally, Projects will integrate ChatGPT's voice mode, offering a convenient hands-free interaction option.

Other notable additions to Projects include the ability for users to generate a unique URL for their chat folders, making them easily shareable. ChatGPT within Projects will also benefit from an improved memory function, allowing it to reference past conversations within a project for more contextually relevant responses. Furthermore, users can now seamlessly convert any existing chat into a project, either through the sidebar menu or by simply dragging and dropping a chat into a project folder.
