It's a common understanding: if a service is free, its funding often comes from sources like affiliate marketing, shopping links, data scraping, or, most ubiquitously, advertising. While ads permeate nearly every digital space, Artificial Intelligence has remained largely untouched—until now, perhaps. Insights from OpenAI's CEO, Sam Altman, suggest that advertisements in chatbots like ChatGPT might not be far off.

Altmans Thoughts on AI and Ads

Sam Altman, known for openly sharing his perspectives on all things AI, delved into this topic on the first episode of OpenAI's podcast. During the 40-minute session with host Andrew Mayne, they discussed the future of ChatGPT and artificial general intelligence.

While much of the conversation covered familiar ground, Mayne's question about ChatGPT potentially serving ads elicited a candid response from Altman.

"We haven't done any advertising product yet," Altman stated. "I kind of...I mean, I'm not totally against it. I can point to areas where I like ads. I think ads on Instagram, kinda cool. I bought a bunch of stuff from them. But I am, like, I think it'd be very hard to…I mean, take a lot of care to get right."

The Crucial Element of Trust in AI

On the challenge of implementing ads correctly in ChatGPT, Altman emphasized the importance of trust. "People have a very high degree of trust in ChatGPT, which is interesting because AI hallucinates. It should be the tech that you don't trust that much."

This admission from the head of OpenAI is significant. He acknowledged that one perhaps shouldn't fully trust ChatGPT due to its tendency to "hallucinate." To clarify, hallucinations in LLMs (large language models) are an inherent aspect of the technology. While measures can minimize false information or detect it early, ChatGPT will likely always face this issue.

It's difficult to imagine companies willingly paying OpenAI to place their ads within ChatGPT if those ads risk being distorted or presented inaccurately. Therefore, the concern extends beyond user trust to include the trust of potential advertisers.

Financial Pressures and the Future of ChatGPT Ads

Considering the substantial financial investment OpenAI makes in its massive AI servers and continuous research, the appearance of ads in ChatGPT seems almost inevitable. Initially, these ads might appear as simple breaks in the text flow, featuring a clickable link or a short video, rather than being generated by the AI itself.

However, with generative AI becoming increasingly integrated into the business world, it wouldn't be surprising to see experimental AI-generated ads emerge. If Altman views Instagram ads as "cool," it strongly suggests that ads in ChatGPT are a distinct possibility.
