OpenAI ChatGPT Voice Update Stumbles
Initial Disappointment with the Update
I recently tried out the updated Advanced Voice feature in ChatGPT and found myself both surprised and quite disappointed by the changes OpenAI has implemented.
The Charm of the Old Robotic Voice
Previously the Advanced Voices had a slightly robotic quality but it was precisely this characteristic that I found magical. Their unwavering positivity and consistency were things a human could never replicate and that is what made the experience truly wonderful.
Questioning the Need for Human Like Speech
In my opinion the AI voice does not need to perfectly mimic human speech to be effective or enjoyable.
The Problem with New Ums and Ahs
The updated voice now incorporates verbal fillers like ums and ahs into its responses. For instance when I posed a simple question the AI single sentence reply included an um that seemed entirely out of place. It gave the impression that the AI was unfocused or as I put it sounded like it had just smoked a bowl.
A Baffling Decision
I am genuinely struggling to understand the reasoning behind this particular update. To me this change feels like a misstep almost an amateur mistake in design.
