Amazon Infuses Prime Video With Generative AI Enhancements
Prime Video Embraces AI for a Better Watch
Viewers using Prime Video are increasingly encountering artificial intelligence on the service, sometimes without even realizing it.
During a conference held at its Culver City studio headquarters on Wednesday, Amazon revealed how it is employing AI to enhance its subscription streaming service and customize the user interface for its over 200 million monthly active users.
From AI-driven broadcast improvements and live event summaries to AI-based search suggestions and language dubbing capabilities, Amazon appears to be widely adopting this technology. The goal is to elevate the quality and personalization of the Prime Video experience, even as the use of AI, particularly in film and television, faces significant scrutiny.
Amazon's Vision for AI in Streaming
"Gen AI tech capabilities are evolving faster than ever, so we’re leaning heavily into invention on every dimension, bringing features to life quickly and at scale to help improve customers’ overall experience," Tricia Lee, director of product and data at Prime Video, stated at Wednesday’s Prime Engage event, which was primarily targeted at advertisers.
Lee elaborated that Amazon is leveraging AI in areas including customization tools, operational functions, and data insights.
How AI is Changing Your Prime Video Experience
One of the most noticeable ways users will interact with AI on the platform is through suggested topics generated by an AI tool, designed to help users refine their search for new content. Drawing from viewing history, this tool might recommend "fantasy quest" series or "mind-bending sci-fi" movies. This application will likely feel familiar, as similar AI tools are increasingly common on social media, search engines, and other platforms to help users tailor their experiences.
Amazon also showcased its use of AI for providing recaps of live events, especially sports, for viewers who join a broadcast already in progress. This feature, too, mirrors the growing use of tools like ChatGPT for summarizing material.
Regarding sports, Prime Video is introducing AI-powered overlays for specific sporting events. These overlays can predict potential upcoming action, such as identifying open receivers as an offensive line sets up, or forecasting which race car drivers have sufficient fuel to complete a race.
Behind the Scenes AI Optimizing Your View
However, subscribers may also benefit from AI on Prime Video in less obvious ways. Amazon is utilizing AI to enhance content resolution and picture quality, particularly for live events affected by inconsistent bandwidth and for older, standard-definition content.
"We’re investing in AI to protect picture quality, even if details are lost at low bit rates, say, for example, over mobile networks," Lee mentioned. "We also see opportunity in AI-based remastering to convert standard definition content into high definition, which we think not only creates a higher quality viewing experience, but preserves creative intent and enhances the value of [an] SD catalog."
This means AI could be working to ensure a seamless broadcast of an NFL game or to upgrade the visual quality of an old episode of Bewitched. Furthermore, AI is employed to detect and correct subtitle and frame-rate issues on the backend, demonstrating another behind-the-scenes application of AI to optimize the platform.
AI Powered Advertising on the Horizon
As AI-driven advertising becomes more prevalent, Amazon is embracing this trend. The streaming service intends to offer advertisers an AI tool that will generate and select ads based on the content a viewer is currently watching. For instance, someone viewing new episodes of The Summer I Turned Pretty might see an AI-generated ad for a travel agency promoting luxurious beach vacations.
Navigating the New Frontier of AI in Media
The legal framework surrounding AI's integration with media is still largely undeveloped. Currently, many AI-related lawsuits in the entertainment sector are focused on clarifying the use of copyrighted materials like films, television shows, and books for creating new content. The tools being introduced by Amazon are primarily aimed at improving existing content, a use case that appears less controversial and is becoming more common.
It is hardly surprising that a technology giant like Amazon would heavily invest in AI. Nevertheless, this remains relatively new terrain for the entertainment industry, and the response, particularly from creative professionals, will be noteworthy. Specifically, using AI to augment the creative or production pipeline has often faced strong criticism. Earlier this year, the creators of the film The Brutalist faced a potential Oscar campaign disruption due to controversy over using AI to refine actors' Hungarian dialogue.
This is where viewer and creative perspectives on AI often diverge. Among individual consumers, AI has generally been received more favorably, especially when it aids in discovering new shows or simplifying platform navigation.
