In a candid and wide-ranging conversation on OpenAI’s newly launched official podcast, CEO Sam Altman outlined a bold new vision for artificial intelligence with the upcoming release of GPT-5. The 40-minute interview with host Andrew Mayne marked the debut episode of the series and offered a rare glimpse into the company’s strategic direction.

A New Vision GPT-5 Unveiled

Altman confirmed that GPT-5, expected to launch this summer, will be a unified AI model designed to replace the current complex range of offerings like GPT-4 and GPT-4o. The goal, he explained, is to streamline the user experience by eliminating the need to switch between models. Altman described the current system as “a whole mess,” emphasizing the need for clarity and simplicity.

“We want to go back to a simple progression. GPT-5, GPT-6 and so on,” he said. “One model that just works.”

Enhanced Intelligence and User Experience

GPT-5 is expected to bring a new level of intelligence and usability to ChatGPT. It will be capable of handling everything from quick queries to complex multi-step reasoning. The model will feature integrated tools such as voice interaction for natural conversation, a visual canvas for image and text collaboration, web search for real-time accuracy, and a deep research function for tackling sophisticated problems.

OpenAI’s intention is to move beyond fast answers and focus on thoughtful, high-quality responses that feel more like those from a human expert. Altman noted that users are surprisingly willing to wait if it means getting a truly great answer.

Access Tiers and Model Integration

Access to GPT-5 will be tiered across OpenAI’s platforms. Free users will have unlimited access to a standard version of the model. ChatGPT Plus subscribers will receive a more advanced level, while Pro users will unlock the highest capabilities available. The upcoming model will also incorporate technology from the now-cancelled O3 model. OpenAI has chosen not to release O3 as a separate offering, instead folding its advancements directly into GPT-5 for a more cohesive rollout.

Streamlining Strategy Naming and Future Models

Internally, OpenAI is rethinking its model-naming strategy to reduce user confusion and streamline the brand. Altman acknowledged that even within the company, there is frustration over the current system. He expressed a desire to return to a simpler, more intuitive structure that doesn’t require users to manually select between different AI versions. Before GPT-5 becomes available, OpenAI will launch GPT-4.5, codenamed Orion. This will be the final model lacking chain-of-thought reasoning, a key feature in GPT-5 that enables more advanced, self-aware processing.

Altman also addressed the competitive landscape during his recent media appearances. He revealed that Meta had offered $100 million bonuses to lure OpenAI engineers, a sign of the fierce competition in the AI space. He also briefly mentioned Elon Musk, alleging that the SpaceX CEO had attempted to use his influence with government regulators to gain an unfair advantage.
