WhatsApp has started rolling out an AI feature to summarize unread messages in chats. This update, initially available in English in the U.S., will later expand to multiple languages and countries, according to a blog post from the platform.
How It Works and How to Opt In
The new message summary feature is designed with user control in mind and is disabled by default. To use it, you'll need to enable the option through Advanced Chat Privacy settings. Within these settings, you can then select which specific chats can be shared for AI features, including summarization.
Once enabled for a chat, an icon will appear next to the unread messages notification. Clicking this icon prompts the AI to generate a summary of the unread messages, presented neatly in bullet points. This allows for a quick catch up without reading through every message.
Privacy at its Core
WhatsApp emphasizes the privacy aspects of this new AI tool. The blog post from the platform states, “Message Summaries uses Private Processing technology, which allows Meta AI to generate a response without Meta or WhatsApp ever seeing your messages or the private summaries.” This means your personal conversations remain private.
Furthermore, your use of the summary feature is discreet. “No one else in the chat can see that you summarized unread messages either,” the announcement clarified.
Meta's AI Integration Journey
This AI summarization feature is another step in Meta's broader strategy of integrating artificial intelligence into its messaging platform. Earlier in March, WhatsApp introduced an AI powered widget for easier access to its AI chatbot. Following that, in April, the company rolled out real time AI image generation capabilities directly within WhatsApp.
What This Means for WhatsApp Users
The ability to summarize unread messages could significantly change how users manage their communications, especially for those in busy group chats or who frequently find themselves overwhelmed by notifications. It offers a way to save time and stay informed more efficiently. As Meta continues to innovate with AI, users can likely expect more such smart features to enhance their WhatsApp experience.
