Xiaomi Unveils AI Powered Smart Glasses For 279 USD
Xiaomi Enters the Smart Eyewear Arena
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi made its official debut in the AI-powered smart glasses market on Thursday. This move signifies the smartphone and electric vehicle (EV) maker's strategic entry into a rapidly growing, yet highly competitive, domestic field for wearable technology.
Introducing a "Next-Generation Personal Smart Gadget"
Xiaomi, headquartered in Beijing, is marketing its new eyewear as a "next-generation personal smart gadget," a vision shared via its official Weibo account. Lei Jun, the company's co-founder and CEO, highlighted that the glasses are capable of recording first-person video and answering voice queries. These functionalities are becoming standard in contemporary smart glasses, similar to offerings from Meta Platforms and Ray-Ban.
The official launch of the frames took place on Thursday evening during Xiaomi's "Human x Car x Home" event. At this showcase, the company also revealed the pricing for the glasses alongside other significant product announcements, such as its newest foldable smartphone and its inaugural SUV.
Key Features and Competitive Specs
Xiaomi's AI glasses will be available at a starting price of 1,999 yuan (approximately US$278.54). Key hardware includes a 12-megapixel ultra-wide camera and Qualcomm’s AR1 chip.
The company emphasized the device's battery performance, claiming it lasts 8.6 hours on a single charge—double the endurance of the Ray-Ban Meta glasses—and can be fully recharged in just 45 minutes.
Smart Functionality with XiaoAI
The glasses are powered by Xiaomi’s own XiaoAI assistant. This integration allows users to interact with the glasses using voice commands for a range of functions. These include capturing photos, recording video clips, recognizing objects, and translating text from a book in real-time. Additionally, the eyewear supports scanning mobile payment QR codes for convenient transactions.
Navigating a Market Dominated by Meta
Xiaomi enters a market where Meta's smart glasses currently lead the pack. According to data from market consultancy Counterpoint, Meta's offerings captured over 60 percent of the global AI glasses market share in the past year, highlighting the competitive challenge ahead for new entrants like Xiaomi.
