From Skeptic to Believer: An AI-Powered Experiment

The hype around Artificial Intelligence has reached a fever pitch, but how much of it translates into real-world usefulness? I recently set out to answer that very question on a vacation, and the experience has permanently changed how I view my smartphone.

Up until this trip, I was an AI skeptic. This was true even though I own an iPhone 15 Pro, which comes with Apple Intelligence features. I simply never felt a need for these services in my daily life. Of course, none of us truly need a smartphone, but we use them because they make many things significantly easier—a lesson I was about to relearn with AI.

Putting AI to the Test in Madeira

For a new series on our YouTube channel called 'AI Planned It', two colleagues and I took three of the top AI phones—the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra, the iPhone 16 Pro, and the Pixel 9 Pro—on a vacation to Madeira. Our mission was straightforward: to test as many of their AI features as we could in a variety of live situations.

For four days, we used AI for almost everything. From real-time translation to photo editing, and from content writing to travel research, our phones were our primary guides. You can see how it all unfolded in our video documenting the trip.

The Verdict: More Than Just a Gimmick

My biggest revelation from this experience wasn't about which phone was superior, though my competitive side has to say the Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra came out on top. It also wasn't the fact that a week using an Android device was almost enough to pull me away from iOS after 15 years as a dedicated iPhone user.

No, the most significant takeaway was my newfound acceptance that AI is genuinely, incredibly useful, and not just for moments of laziness. It's a powerful tool that can enhance our experiences in meaningful ways.

Practical Tools for the Modern Traveler

AI assistants like Gemini Live and the new ChatGPT-powered Siri are fantastic learning tools, even if they occasionally show flaws and provide incorrect information in destinations with a smaller digital footprint like Madeira. For anyone who loves taking pictures and videos, the powerful editing tools available on each of these phones can truly elevate your vacation memories.

Of course, not all AI tools are created equal. As a professional writer, the AI writing features felt mostly unnecessary to me, but I can see how they would be incredibly helpful for others.
