Apple Seeks AI Upgrade For Siri From ChatGPT Or Claude

In a significant move to enhance its virtual assistant, Apple is reportedly considering a major partnership with leading AI companies Anthropic or OpenAI. According to a Bloomberg report, discussions are underway to potentially integrate powerful large language models (LLMs) like Claude or ChatGPT to serve as the new brain for Siri.

The Search for the Right AI Partner

Apple's search for an AI partner is a strategic effort to overhaul Siri's capabilities. Both Anthropic and OpenAI are believed to possess training models that are compatible with Apple's privacy-focused Private Cloud Compute system. While it's not yet clear if Siri will be completely replaced, the integration would represent a massive leap forward.

Initial talks suggested Apple leaned towards Anthropic, finding its technology a better fit. However, negotiations hit a snag over finances. Anthropic reportedly proposed a contract with an increasing annual fee, which led Apple to re-engage with OpenAI and other potential partners in search of a more cost-effective agreement.

A Race Against Time for Apple Intelligence

This exploration of external partnerships comes as Apple's internal development of a next-generation Siri has progressed slowly. The company's own ambitious project, dubbed Apple Intelligence, is facing delays, with key features not expected to arrive until 2026 at the earliest. A fully working version has been promised for the iOS 26 release, but leveraging an external partner could deliver a vastly improved user experience much sooner.
