UK Sees Sharp Decline In Graduate Jobs Since ChatGPT
A new report highlights a concerning trend for young professionals entering the workforce in the United Kingdom.
A Drastic Drop in Entry-Level Opportunities
Research from the job search site Adzuna reveals that the number of available entry-level jobs has plummeted by nearly a third, a staggering 31.9 percent, since the public release of ChatGPT. This decline encompasses a wide range of roles crucial for starting a career, including junior positions, graduate schemes, and apprenticeships.
The data indicates that vacancies for graduates have hit their lowest point since the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, these foundational roles now represent only a quarter of the total job market, a noticeable decrease from 28.9 percent in 2022.
The Dual Causes Behind the Decline
The sharp downturn isn't attributed to a single factor but rather a combination of technological advancement and economic pressures.
Firstly, the rise of powerful artificial intelligence tools is a significant part of the equation, with companies increasingly using AI to handle tasks traditionally performed by junior staff. Secondly, businesses are contending with rising labor costs, which include increased National Insurance contributions. For a time, rising salaries were also outpacing inflation, adding further financial pressure on employers.
