Generative AI Apps Are Dominating The Mobile Market
The generative AI revolution isn't just happening on desktops; it's exploding in our pockets. The first half of 2025 has marked a period of unprecedented growth for generative AI mobile applications, with users downloading and spending more than ever before. A detailed report from market intelligence firm Sensor Tower breaks down the incredible numbers behind this surge.
The GenAI App Boom by the Numbers
The metrics for the first half of 2025 are staggering. GenAI apps were downloaded 1.7 billion times, a significant leap from the 1 billion downloads in the latter half of 2024. This increased user base is also spending more, with in-app revenue doubling from $932 million to an impressive $1.87 billion during the same period.
User engagement has also skyrocketed. People spent over 15.6 billion hours on these applications, nearly double the 8.5 billion hours recorded in H2 2024. This activity was spread across a massive 426 billion sessions, showing just how integrated these tools are becoming in daily life.
A Global Phenomenon with Regional Leaders
While the GenAI trend is global, different regions are leading in different aspects. Asia has emerged as the fastest-growing market and now holds the largest market share for downloads at 42.6%, driven by high adoption in India and Mainland China. Download growth in Asia hit 80% in H1 2025, far outpacing Europe (51%) and North America (39%).
When it comes to spending, however, North America remains the leader, accounting for 40% of the market share. Latin America, meanwhile, registered the highest growth rate for in-app purchases, indicating a rapidly maturing market.
ChatGPT The Undisputed Market King
At the forefront of this boom is ChatGPT, which dominates the market as the top app for in-app revenue in every country except China. Even in terms of user engagement, ChatGPT is a clear leader. On average, users opened the app more than 12 days a month in the first half of the year, with other popular apps like Character AI, PolyBuzz, DeepSeek, and Perplexity following behind.
The app's stickiness is particularly impressive, with Sensor Tower noting that people are using ChatGPT as frequently as they use X and Reddit. Its usage patterns are increasingly resembling those of primary search tools. The report states, “This development makes its app usage patterns more akin to Google’s, which consumers rely on as a primary search tool both during and outside of work hours.”
This is further supported by the narrowing gap in daily usage time between ChatGPT and top search engine apps (16 minutes vs. 18.2 minutes). Users are also turning to the AI for a wide range of tasks beyond work, including health and wellness, shopping, finance, and meal prep, with over a third of prompts in Q2 2025 relating to lifestyle and entertainment.
The Rise of the AI Keyword
The term "AI" has become a powerful marketing tool in the app world. The keyword now appears over 100,000 times in app descriptions across the App Store and Play Store. In H1 2025 alone, apps mentioning AI were downloaded 7.5 billion times, making up about 10% of all downloads.
Many apps in categories from photo editing to tutoring have added AI-related terms to their names and descriptions. While this strategy provides a notable short-term boost in downloads, its long-term effectiveness remains to be seen.
Sensor Tower concludes, “Unsurprisingly, apps that added terms like ‘AI’ or ‘LLM’ to their app names or descriptions experienced a notable boost in downloads over the subsequent months.”
