AI Warns Against Buying These Electric Vehicles
Electric vehicles (EVs) are rapidly gaining popularity across the country, with some states like California boasting over 1.2 million registered EVs as of 2023, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. While EVs promise savings on gas and a smaller carbon footprint, not all models are a wise investment. With the average new EV costing around $57,734 according to Kelley Blue Book, making an informed choice is more important than ever.
To get a modern perspective on which cars to avoid, we looked at what ChatGPT had to say when asked a simple question: “Which electric vehicles should I stay away from buying?”
ChatGPT's List of EVs to Avoid
Artificial intelligence can be a useful starting point for research, but it's not always consistent. When prompted, ChatGPT provided a list of EVs to avoid. Interestingly, when asked the same question a second time, the list changed. This highlights the variable nature of AI responses.
First List Provided:
- Chevrolet Bolt EV/EUV (2020-2022 models)
- Nissan Leaf (older models, pre-2018)
- Mazda MX-30
- Jaguar I-PACE (2019-2023)
- Mini Electric (Cooper SE)
- Fisker Ocean
- Toyota bZ4X
- Subaru Solterra (2022-2023 models)
Second List Provided:
- BMW i3
- Chevrolet Bolt EV (2017-2021)
- Nissan Leaf (older models)
- Fiat 500e
- Hyundai Kona Electric (early models)
- Volkswagen e-Golf
- Ford Focus Electric
- Tesla Model S (early models)
Why Were These Models Flagged by AI?
ChatGPT provided specific reasons for some of its recommendations. It flagged the Chevrolet Bolt for major battery fire recalls and pointed out the severely limited range of the Mazda MX-30 and Mini Cooper SE Electric. For the Toyota bZ4X, it noted recalls over wheels potentially falling off and software issues. The Fisker Ocean was mentioned due to concerns about the company itself and its customer service.
How Do Human Experts Weigh In?
Just like AI, automotive experts have varied opinions. Some agree with ChatGPT’s suggestions. Melanie Musson, an auto industry expert with AutoInsurance.org, supported the warning against the Nissan Leaf. “The early models of the Nissan Leaf are notorious for battery problems,” she said. “Since the battery is the foundational component of an EV, having an unreliable one means the car can become worthless instantly.”
However, others believe the AI's advice is too simplistic. Ruth Calkins, general manager at FindByPlate, disagreed with several of the AI's picks. “I believe some of the EVs on this list are solid choices, with strengths that outshine their weaknesses, especially when it comes to EVs like the Toyota bZ4X, Subaru Solterra and the Mini Electric (Cooper SE),” she noted, pointing to their standout performance and design features.
Key Red Flags to Watch for When Buying an EV
Ultimately, whether you start your research with AI or an expert review, the decision is yours. According to ChatGPT, here are some general red flags to keep in mind when evaluating any electric vehicle:
- Poor Range: Be wary of cars with less than 150 miles of range, unless used exclusively for short city commutes.
- Slow Charging Speeds: A charge time of over 45 minutes to get from 10% to 80% can be a major inconvenience.
- No Thermal Battery Management: This can lead to faster battery degradation, especially in extreme climates.
- Manufacturer Instability: The financial health and reliability of the car manufacturer can impact future service, parts, and support.
Before you buy, be sure to check reliability ratings, test drive the vehicle, and research its real-world range and safety features. Shopping around and comparing different models is the best way to ensure you find an EV that fits your needs and budget.
