The AI's suggestions were then cross-referenced with insights from human auto expert Alex Black of EpicVIN.
Here are five luxury vehicles that both AI and experts suggest you might want to steer clear of.
Maserati Ghibli
While the Maserati Ghibli is an Italian sport sedan that certainly looks the part, ChatGPT flagged it for significant reliability concerns. The AI pointed to the use of cheap-feeling interior materials relative to its price point and a reputation for high maintenance needs. Common complaints reportedly include electrical system failures, engine problems, and a scarcity of available parts, which can lead to long and costly repairs.
This sentiment was echoed by auto expert Alex Black, who described the Ghibli as a "dressed-up version of a Chrysler" but with a much higher price. He emphasized that "the parts cost an arm and a leg, and maintenance accumulates rapidly," making it a purchase he does not recommend.
Jaguar XF/XE
The Jaguar brand is synonymous with British style, but according to ChatGPT, its vehicles, specifically the XF and XE sedans, are known for poor reliability. The chatbot highlighted recurring issues with electrical systems and the infotainment unit. Another major drawback is their low resale value; the AI claims these models depreciate much faster than many of their German competitors.
Alex Black agreed, noting that while the cars are a pleasure to drive, the ownership experience can be marred by frequent maintenance. "The transmission, electric system, and expensive repairs contribute to a bad buy in the long run," he warned.
BMW 7 Series (Older Models Around 2010-2016)
An older, used BMW 7 Series can seem like a bargain, offering flagship luxury for a fraction of its original cost. However, ChatGPT advises caution. Models from the 2010-2016 era are notorious for complex electronics that can be incredibly expensive to fix once the warranty has expired. Specific failure points mentioned include the air suspension, engine cooling system, and the iDrive infotainment system.
While praising the 7 Series for its high-tech features and comfort, Black extended this warning to the model in general, not just older versions. "Electronics fail, suspension deteriorates, and even small jobs cost an arm and a leg," he stated. "Post-warranty, the cost of owning a BMW 7 Series will escalate."
Range Rover (Especially Pre-2018 Models)
The Range Rover is an iconic luxury SUV, but it also has a well-documented history of reliability problems. ChatGPT specifically warned against pre-2018 models, which are known for issues with their air suspension, electrical systems, and transmissions. These repairs can be extraordinarily expensive, even on vehicles with relatively low mileage.

ChatGPT described the Audi A8 as a "beautifully engineered" sedan but cautioned that its complexity leads to high maintenance costs. The AI noted that the A8's air suspension and electronics are common points of failure. Furthermore, it suggested that the A8 tends to lose its value more quickly than direct competitors like the Mercedes S-Class, making it a less sound financial investment over time.
