Whether it's knitting, learning Spanish, or skydiving, we all have hobbies that we love. However, making progress isn’t always easy. You might hit a wall, lose interest, or just need a little motivation to keep going.

Traditionally, this meant investing in a training course, doing heavy research, or relying on trial and error. But now, there's a powerful tool that can help you improve.

ChatGPT can be a fantastic source of motivation and information for your hobbies. Here are five effective prompts that you can use to see real success in a wide variety of skills and interests.

1. Get a Custom 30-Day Plan

Prompt: Write me a 30-day plan for [insert hobby]

This prompt is especially powerful if you have access to a smarter reasoning model like GPT-4, as the AI can use its full thinking power to create a detailed plan. It's perfect for a complete beginner, setting you up with your first month of learning an instrument, language, sport, or anything else. Just let ChatGPT know your skill level, and it will lay out a clear plan.

For example, I tried this with a 30-day running plan aiming to complete a 10K. ChatGPT generated a four-week plan that included not just running but also walking days, rest days, and other forms of exercise. It even provided a printable calendar and tips.

The best part is the ability to adjust the plan. Once it's generated, you can ask for changes, like making it harder, adding a test in the middle, or requesting more detailed guides for each day. Pro tip: Ask ChatGPT to “use the internet” in your query to get a response sourced from up-to-date information.

2. Break Through a Learning Plateau

Prompt: How can I get over [insert hobby and pain point] plateau

It happens to all of us. When you start a new hobby, progress feels fast and easy. But then, you get stuck. Getting past this stage is a real challenge, but ChatGPT can be a helpful tool if you have some understanding of where you're stuck.

For instance, I used this prompt to get past a climbing plateau by explaining the grade I couldn’t seem to exceed. You could do the same for running times, chess levels, a piano piece you're struggling with, or a drawing style you want to improve.

ChatGPT's understanding has improved drastically, and it's surprisingly good at reading between the lines. When I asked for help with climbing grades, it gave me eight detailed suggestions and, when I asked, a weekly plan to focus on improvement.

3. Test Your Knowledge with a Quiz

Prompt: Quiz me on [insert topic]

This prompt is ideal for hobbies that are more knowledge-based. It works great for languages, chess, or even learning about topics like history or geography.

Simply ask ChatGPT to quiz you on a topic, and you’ll get a series of multiple-choice questions. I asked it to quiz me on chess openings, and it provided a helpful test. You could do the same for American states, Spanish vocabulary, or general knowledge trivia.

4. Set an Ambitious New Challenge

Prompt: Set me a challenge in [insert hobby]

If you're motivated by having a clear goal to aim for, this is a great way to define one. Ask ChatGPT to set a challenge for you in your hobby, but be sure to give a clear indicator of your current skill level.

For example, try saying, “Set me a goal in running as someone who currently runs a 5K in 30 minutes.” This gives the model the context it needs to set a reasonable and effective baseline for your next challenge.

5. Get Actionable Advice for Your Goals

This prompt is best used when you feel like you're struggling to make progress. If you’re not seeing the results you want at the gym or on the tennis court, use this prompt to get specific tips and tricks to move forward.

I've found this prompt is a great way to get targeted advice, no matter your current skill level. It can save you the time and effort of trying a bunch of different techniques or training methods that might not work for you.
