The name ChatGPT is now a household term, but the world's most famous AI chatbot was almost given a far more technical and forgettable title. In a revealing podcast, key figures from OpenAI shared the inside story of the last-minute decision that helped shape the AI revolution.

A Last-Minute Rebrand

On a recent episode of the official OpenAI podcast, Nick Turley, head of ChatGPT, and Mark Chen, the company's research chief, explained that the chatbot was originally slated to be called "Chat with GPT-3.5." The name we know today was the result of a "late-night decision to simplify," made just one day before its public launch in late 2022.

"We realized that that would be hard to pronounce and came up with a great name instead," Turley said. The team settled on ChatGPT, a catchy abbreviation for its underlying technology: Generative Pre-trained Transformer.

The Viral Phenomenon

While the team felt the new name was better, few at OpenAI anticipated the explosive success that would follow. Andrew Mayne, the podcast host, noted that the technology itself wasn't drastically different from previous versions. The key changes were a more intuitive, user-friendly interface and the memorable name.

Immediately after launch, the tool took off. "It soon became clear that ChatGPT's popularity wasn't going to fade quickly and that the tool was 'going to change the world,'" Turley recalled, noting how Reddit users from as far as Japan were experimenting with it. This viral adoption cemented its place in the market and helped boost OpenAI's valuation.

More Than Just a Name

The success of ChatGPT quickly spawned a host of competitors, including Google's Gemini, Meta AI, and DeepSeek, all vying for a piece of the generative AI pie. Millions of users now turn to the chatbot for everything from simple searches to getting help with complex tasks like offering a friend career advice.

For the developers, the launch was a defining moment. "We've had so many launches, so many previews over time, and this one really was something else," Chen stated. He also shared a humorous personal milestone that put the success into perspective: "My parents just stopped asking me to go work for Google."
