Questioning the AI Era Narrative

First, let's challenge a fundamental premise we hear constantly: are we truly living in the “era of artificial intelligence?” While it's a possibility, I remain unconvinced.

It's crucial to remember that tech companies, having invested untold millions into this technology, have a vested interest in making us believe their latest product is the defining feature of our times. They desperately want us to accept this narrative, pushing it into our schools and search results. However, we are not obligated to accept their version of reality.

The Danger of Devaluing Human Consciousness

There's a common and unfortunate turn in this conversation, exemplified by this kind of thinking: “Much of the job, if he was honest, relied on stylized prediction algorithms: repeat the right words in the right sequence, in the right format, and release them into the bloodstream of policy discourse. Maybe add a dose of moral outrage, a bit of rhetorical flourish tailored to the audience; rinse and repeat.”

This raises a persistent question: why are we so susceptible to the latest tech-jargon spin while simultaneously being so quick to devalue ourselves? It's genuinely heartbreaking to see how many people simply shrug off the miracle of human consciousness when a new technology emerges. The release of AI tools like ChatGPT has been stunning, not for the technology itself, but for how it has laid bare the vast insecurities of so many.

The Miracle of Human Spontaneity

In response to the idea that human expression is just a repeatable algorithm, I argue that human writing is a miraculous act. We may have become so accustomed to the complex processes involved that we take them for granted, but this is a grave mistake.

Contrary to being routine, creative acts like writing, music, or even athletics are inherently spontaneous. It is through this uniquely human spontaneity that we can transcend the old and create something entirely new. This capacity for originality is what fundamentally separates us from predictive algorithms.

A Call to Appreciate Our Own Minds

I wish the mystery of human consciousness received the same level of attention and funding that AI does. We still lack definitive explanations for consciousness, dreams, intuition, imagination, and intelligence, though many theories exist.

Instead of standing in awe of these miracles within us, we often discount them in favor of alternatives we label “artificial.” I grow increasingly concerned about the unnecessary damage we will inflict upon ourselves before we learn to correct this profound error in judgment.
