TikTok and ChatGPT Dominate June App Market Report
As June came to a close, the mobile app landscape provided a clear view of user spending and engagement habits. While entertainment staples like short-form video and streaming services held their ground, applications driven by artificial intelligence have continued their impressive ascent, making significant gains in both usage and user spending.
June's Top Earning Apps: TikTok Leads the Pack
Once again, TikTok claimed the top spot on the revenue charts, generating an incredible $384 million in global earnings across both the Apple App Store and Google Play. This marks the platform's highest monthly revenue to date and solidifies its position as the market leader. While the majority of this income came from iOS users, Android users still contributed a substantial portion, exceeding $100 million.
Hot on its heels was ChatGPT, which secured the second position with $185 million in combined revenue. This strong performance signals that the AI-powered app is rapidly gaining mainstream adoption and demonstrates users' willingness to invest in productivity tools.
Following the top two were familiar names in streaming and social networking. YouTube and Tinder battled for position, with Tinder earning approximately $133 million. Disney+ saw a slight dip, bringing in $112 million. Meanwhile, Google One and HBO Max were tied at $92 million each, highlighting the continued demand for cloud storage and premium streaming content. Other notable earners in the top ten included the video editor CapCut, which surpassed $80 million, and Tencent's QQ and Video platforms, which maintained strong performance in the Asian market.
Platform-Specific Revenue: iOS vs Google Play
On the iOS App Store, TikTok's dominance was even more pronounced, with earnings of $266 million. ChatGPT came in second with a strong $147 million, followed by YouTube at $137 million. Tinder and Tencent Video completed the top five on Apple's platform.
Over on Google Play, TikTok also led the charge, though by a smaller margin. Google's own Google One service was the runner-up with $92 million in revenue. Disney+ ($45 million) and Amazon's app ($44 million) were close contenders, while ChatGPT placed fifth on Android with $38 million in earnings.
Download Wars: ChatGPT Claims the Top Spot
ChatGPT's success wasn't limited to revenue; it also attracted the most new users globally in June. The app was downloaded 50 million times, with 15 million installs on iOS and 36 million on Android, marking its second consecutive month as the world's most downloaded app.
TikTok followed in second place with 37 million installs, just ahead of Instagram at 36 million. The rest of the top ten was filled with social media and communication giants like Facebook, WhatsApp, and Telegram, alongside popular apps like CapCut, Temu, and Threads.
The Big Picture: AI's Infiltration of the App Market
In total, the top ten most downloaded apps were installed on approximately 290 million devices in June. This represents a slight 8% decrease from May, a common trend as summer begins. ChatGPT was a notable exception, continuing to grow while many others saw a minor slowdown.
The key takeaway from June's data is the shifting balance of power. While entertainment apps continue to command user spending, AI-powered tools are now firmly established as top contenders. TikTok may hold a significant lead in earnings, but ChatGPT's remarkable performance in both revenue and downloads proves that users are equally willing to invest in innovation and productivity as they are in content and social connections. The competition between streaming, social, storage, and AI has never been more intense.
