The way we experience art is constantly evolving, and now, technology is adding a powerful new dimension to one of the world's most prestigious art events. In a landmark collaboration, Valorem Reply, a Microsoft-focused digital innovation firm, has partnered with Art Basel to transform the visitor experience at its global fairs.

Together with Microsoft, they have launched Art Basel Lens, a groundbreaking AI-powered feature within the Art Basel Companion app. This tool puts a personal art expert in every visitor's pocket, changing the game for how art is discovered and appreciated at these massive international shows.

With Valorem Reply, Art Basel introduced a mobile image recognition feature that connects audiences to artworks using Microsoft Azure.

Your Personal Art Guide in Your Pocket

Imagine walking through a bustling Art Basel fair, surrounded by thousands of incredible artworks. When a piece catches your eye, what if you could learn everything about it instantly? That's the problem Art Basel Lens solves.

Visitors can simply use their smartphone to scan any artwork on display. In real-time, the app uses advanced image recognition to identify the piece and present a rich collection of information, including:

  • Detailed information about the artwork.
  • The life and work of the artist who created it.
  • Background on the gallery presenting the piece.

This creates a more autonomous and fluid journey through the fair, allowing visitors to follow their curiosity. It also simplifies sharing, with an option to post discoveries to social media with automatic attributions.

The Technology Behind the Canvas

The magic of Art Basel Lens is powered by a sophisticated tech stack built on Microsoft Azure. Valorem Reply, with contributions from Concept Reply, spearheaded the development of the AI image recognition pipeline.

This system uses Azure AI to train and host the models for identifying artworks from a photo. To deliver near-instant results, Azure AI Search powers the visual matching through advanced vector-based search. The entire backend runs on Azure App Service and Azure Functions to manage the image processing workflows, while Azure Blob Storage securely handles the vast library of art assets.

From a Successful Pilot to a Global Stage

Before a full-scale launch, the feature was piloted at Art Basel's Miami Beach fair. This live test proved crucial for fine-tuning the technology in a real-world environment. Following its success, Art Basel Lens was scaled for use across all major events in Basel, Paris, Hong Kong, and Qatar.

This technology acts as an unobtrusive digital layer that enhances, rather than interferes with, the physical experience. It supports discovery and deepens engagement, making the world of art more accessible than ever.
