Curious about where ChatGPT is making the biggest waves in the United States? The answer might not be what you think. Forget the usual tech hubs for a moment; the real story is in the rapid growth happening across a diverse range of states.

In a recent report on the economy and worker productivity, OpenAI, the company behind the revolutionary AI chatbot, shared a fascinating glimpse into its user growth across the country. The report pinpoints the specific regions where the tool is being adopted at the fastest pace.

The Top 15 States Leading AI Adoption

The report included a map and a ranked list of the 15 states where ChatGPT adoption is growing the most rapidly. The results showcase a diverse mix of regions embracing the technology, with some unexpected names leading the pack.

A map highlighting the 15 US states adopting ChatGPT the fastest.

Here are the top 15 states, in order of fastest adoption:

  1. Virginia
  2. Nebraska
  3. Nevada
  4. Alabama
  5. Vermont
  6. Kansas
  7. New York
  8. Delaware
  9. Maryland
  10. Rhode Island
  11. Washington
  12. Kentucky
  13. Georgia
  14. Montana
  15. Alaska

The Methodology Behind the Ranking

So, how was this list determined? An OpenAI spokesperson clarified that the ranking isn't based on the total number of users but on the growth of weekly active users relative to the existing user base. The data compares weekly active users as of July 15 to the user base three months prior, in April.

A Global Phenomenon with Massive US Engagement

This state-level data is part of a much larger story of explosive growth. According to the same report, OpenAI's AI products are used by over half a billion people worldwide. Together, these users generate a staggering 2.5 billion messages on the platform every single day. Of that incredible volume, more than 330 million messages come from users in the US alone, underscoring the massive scale at which this technology is being integrated into daily life and work since its landmark launch in November 2022.
