Jack Neo's Controversial AI Tribute

SINGAPORE – A music video by acclaimed local filmmaker Jack Neo has stirred discussion online after featuring an AI-generated image of Singapore's founding prime minister, the late Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. The video for the song "We Are Singapore" was posted on social media on August 18.

Towards the end of the video, the AI-generated likeness of Mr. Lee appears, delivering a message in a mix of Mandarin and English: "I wish Singapore a happy 60th birthday. Happy birthday." In his post, Mr. Neo connected the video's theme of unity to Prime Minister Lawrence Wong’s recent National Day Rally speech, sharing what he called a "belated SG60 song."

Mixed Reactions and Official Assessment

The use of AI to resurrect a historical figure drew a polarized response from the public. While some viewers praised the song's patriotic lyrics and message, others criticized the digital recreation of Mr. Lee as inappropriate.

In response to the public debate, the Ministry of Culture, Community and Youth (MCCY) weighed in. The ministry stated that it views the use of AI in this context as part of Mr. Neo's artistic intent to commemorate Singapore’s upcoming 60th year of independence. An official statement noted, "We assess that the use of Mr. Lee’s image is respectful."

The Filmmaker's Intent

In an interview with 8world, Jack Neo explained his creative decision, emphasizing the immense contributions of the founding prime minister to the nation. He remarked that many Singaporeans still feel the loss of Mr. Lee and that using modern AI to have him "wish Singapore" a happy birthday felt "very meaningful."

Mr. Neo also revealed the extent to which AI was used in the project. He penned the lyrics himself, but the song's composition, musical arrangement, and even the vocals were all completed using artificial intelligence.

Guidelines on Using Lee Kuan Yew's Image

MCCY has established guidelines regarding the use of material related to Mr. Lee Kuan Yew. These guidelines permit his likeness to be featured in creative works for two primary purposes: to identify with the nation in art or publications, and to educate the public on the achievements of Singapore’s pioneer generation. The key condition for any such use is that the work must "accord dignity and respect" to the memory of the late Mr. Lee.
